Warhammer 40K: Will More Than Cadians Get Rules In the New Astra Militarum Codex?

Let’s talk about what Astra Militarum Regiments might get rules – other than Cadians.

Cadians are getting new rules in the upcoming Guard codex. We already knew that there would be a Cadian Shock Troopers unit in the book. Today we got a peak from GW showing that Cadian Sohck Troops were also getting a unit rule. So what other regiments might get rules? Let’s take a look.

New Cadian Rules

As shown off today Cadians are coming with  a new rule, Shock Troops. Its not clear if this applies to all their units or just the new Shock Troop unit, I’d guess just the unit, but we will have to see. It’s a pretty cool rule over all. It helps set them apart from the basic Infantry Squad and gives them a little extra ompf. I hadn’t really thought about the units getting rules, this is normally what the Regimental doctrines are for. But with those no longer being targeted to a specific regiment it makes sense that the units from a regiment would get some new rules. This had me wondering who else might get rules.

Attilans

We already know that Attilan Rough Riders are going to be in the book. GW has confirmed this for us. However even though we know they will be in the codex I’m not sure they will get any Attilan rules. As a unique unit I’m sure they will have some special rules, but since they are the only Rough Riders I’m not sure they will be Attilan rules. I’d expect some kind of bonus on the charge, that’s an old Rough Rider rule, but not sure if anything else.

Death Korps of Kreig

DKoK are fan favorites and JUST got new plastic models. They have got to be in the book. Given this new format of a regiment just having an infantry type unit, its now easy to fit them in. I’m guessing its some kind of Death Korps either replacement for Veterans or just a type of Infantry Squad. Since they don’t have plastic models for them we can also bet on no heavy weapons. For a rule its got to be something making them tougher. Maybe a 6+++ save?

Catachans

Catachans are a classic unit with current(ish) plastic models. They also have like 3 named characters so you can bet they will be in the army.  Again this seems likely to be a Infantry Squad replacement unit. I’d guess the unit can maybe take extra flamers as that’s pretty classic for the regiment. Since Catachans are kind of the default melee Guard to Cadians default shooting Guard, I’m guess their rule could be the same as Cadians, but for shooting.

Tallarns

You can still sometimes get Tallarn stuff from GW. They also had some Forge World models here and there, as stars of the Taros Campaign. For the “forgotten” old metal regiments they have had the most support over the years. If anyone is going to get a unit or rules it would probably be Tallarns. I’d guess for a rule either let them fall back and shoot or something movement related to represent their swiftness and hit and run techniques.

Tanith

There are some current plastic Tanith models and we do have current rules for Gaunt’s Ghosts as a unit. I’d love to see Tanith get a whole unit in the book and some rules, but kind of doubt it will happen. Without models GW doesn’t seem to want to give them rules. At best we will likely see just the same Guant’s Ghosts unit copied into the book. I dunno if they will get new rules, I’d hope so, but at worst we can hope for at least a copy paste of their current rules.

The Rest

Mordians, Vostyrans and Steel Legion all had rules in the previous book. They’ve all also had models you could buy pretty recently, even if they are no longer on the GW site. Still I kind of have the feeling these guys are getting killed off so to speak. Without any current models I doubt we will see rules or units for them yet. We can always hope that GW has either held a surprise back or will put out a Guard “Wave 2” in a few months. Until then lets hope we are least get the regiments I’ve talked about above.

Let us know which Regiments you think will be in the book, down in the comments!
