Wizards of the Coast have just released eleven new monsters for 5th Edition with a new expansion for their Monstrous Compendium series. If you missed the first one, which was Spelljammer-themed, the Monstrous Compendium is a supplemental monster manual. Inside each, you’ll find extra creatures you can use in your games.

But you can only claim them if you have a free D&D Beyond account. It’s a free reward designed to help enhance the user experience. If you’re a D&D Beyond user that is.

The Monstrous Compendium: Volume 2 introduces some classic monsters, and NPCs from pitiful to powerful. Including Dragon Highlord Verminaard himself.

Monstrous Compendium Volume 2 – Dragonlance Creatures

This bestiary provides game statistics and lore for eleven monsters that, while linked to the fantastical and war-gripped Dragonlance setting, are suitable for any Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The creatures in this bestiary are organized alphabetically.

And each of these eleven monsters brings something different to the table. There are the nightmarish Dream Eaters, who originate from the dream-warped elven realm of Silvanesti. These living nightmares come in at CR 7, and promise to engage and imperil the whole party, with an engulf ability that deals damage to anyone caught in it as well as trying to free someone from it.

But there are plenty of high-level creatures in the packet too. The highest is Ember, also known as Pyros. Ember is an imperious, ruthless red dragon who serves Takhisis the Dragon Queen. He is currently the Dragon Highlord Verminaard’s “adviser”. But that is a role that ill-suits the mighty dragon, empowered by Takhisis herself.

Ember’s abilities include a special Firestorm Breath weapon, which not only deals 16d6 fire damage but pushes creatures away and knocks them prone just for playing. Anyone killed immediately gets burned to ash.

This is on top of a powerful bite and claw attack, and repeating aura ability.

You’ll also find:

  • Forest Master
  • Foresworn
  • Irda Seeker
  • Irda Veil Keeper
  • Nevermind Gnome Inventor
  • Nevermind Gnome Mastermind
  • Thanoi Hunter
  • Traag Draconian
  • Verminaard (Dragon Highlord)
