Death Stranding may have been one of 2019’s weirdest video games. And soon it will also be a very weird film.

Death Stranding is one of 2019’s weirdest and hardest-to-explain video games and is one of the next to get the feature film treatment. Here’s what we know, what we have to look forward to, and what we’re hoping for.

Death Stranding Film

Hideo Kojima and Hammerstone Studios announced yesterday that they were working together to create a film based on the 2019 video game, Death Stranding. There are very few details available yet, and that’s probably because there aren’t many details to reveal. In fact, it sounds like this partnership has only recently been forged. But it looks like both parties are excited to move forward with this project.

Game writer and director, Hideo Kojima has always given me the impression that he’s a pretty big movie buff and would probably want to make one.

“I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios,” Kojima told Variety. “This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing ‘Death Stranding’ to the big screen.”

And Hammerstone may be the perfect studio to work on a Death Stranding film with. They’re definitely no stranger to taking something a little weird and making a great movie. 2022’s Barbarian was thanks to Hammerstone Studios, and it was one of my top five movies of the year. But they’re also responsible for 2020’s Bill & Ted Face the Music and Come Away.

That said, we have questions. This project isn’t described as anything aside from a “film,” so what sort of film are we talking about? Will this be live-action or more of the motion capture we’ve seen in Death Stranding and movies like Avatar? Can we hope to see Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen return to their roles for a movie? How will this movie flow with the game and the upcoming Death Stranding 2? This will be a wild ride and I for one can’t wait for more details.

About Death Stranding

Death Stranding is an open-world action game where you play as Sam Bridges to deliver supplies for a company known as BRIDGES. It may sound like a mail main sim, but the reality of the game is a dark post-apocalyptic story that raises questions about life and morality in a complex world.

The game was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews and was nominated for multiple awards including multiple wins for technical achievement, score, design, performance, and direction.

Death Stranding 2 has been in production for a while with Kojima claiming to have had an entire sequel story finished before the start of the 2019 pandemic. But after the start of the pandemic when similarities between the events of Death Stranding and real life were pointed out, Kojima decided to rewrite the entire story from scratch.

Are you excited about a Death Stranding film as well as the video game’s sequel? Do you think Hammerstone Studios will do this project justice? What do you hope to see from this movie? Let us know in the comments!
