Jump Festa 2023 included a few announcements of what we could expect from some of our favorite animes in the new year.

Jump Festa is the yearly expo celebrating all things Shonen Jump. With so many manga (and anime) popularized in this legendary magazine, there are always a ton of announcements regarding the anime we can expect from the new year. And this year’s Jump Festa let us know that some of our favorites from this and last year would be back and when.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season Two

We knew that Jujutsu Kaisen was coming back. The first season was too popular not to come back and feature film, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, to nobody’s surprise, did well at the box office. Plus they announced back in February that we could expect a second season sometime in 2023. But Jump Festa finally gave us something a little more concrete with a minute-long character introduction video and release date.

Starting in July 2023 season two will run for two “cours,”  or quarters of a year. This means that season two of Jujutsu Kaisen will have a continuous half-year run. The anime will adapt the Kaigyoku/Gyokusetsu and Shibuya Incident arcs.

Jujutsu Kaisen premiered in October 2020 and quickly found a ton of success with anime fans. The show’s stand-alone movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 opened in theaters in Japan in December 2021 before eventually opening worldwide and then coming to streaming services. The hugely popular series mixes high school silliness with horror and gore, to create a show that’s never too much. Going in I thought this was going to be eye-rollingly edgy, but instead, it’s a fantastic and very fun show that I look forward to seeing more of. If you want to watch the 24-episode-and-one-movie run of Jujutsu Kaisen before the season two premiere, you have more than half a year to get caught up.

Spy x Family

The first half of season one of Spy x Family premiered on April 9th with the second half of the season starting relatively recently on October 1st. But this runaway hit about a spy’s fake family is already slated for a second season and a movie in 2023. The movie will be a stand-alone with an original story.

Just like with Jujutsu Kaisen, we’re not surprised that Spy x Family will be back. Everybody seems to love this feel-good found-family-action-spy-drama. What is surprising is how quickly this news came. The final episode of season one hasn’t even aired yet.

At this time we don’t have a more exact time frame for either season two nor the movie. But considering season one is still in progress, it’s hard to be antsy for more already. Still, we’re looking forward to the continuing story of Loid, Yor, and Anya and their strange little-found family.
