My Hero Academia is the latest anime Netflix is aiming to give their live action treatment to. We’re not sure if we’re hopeful or not.

Netflix has been picking up live-action anime adaptation after live-action adaptation. And with offerings such as Death Note still in our collective memories, it’s hard to say that they have a good track record with these adaptations. But it looks like there will be at least one more as the super-powered high schoolers of My Hero Academia are next up for the live-action treatment.

Netflix Loves Live Action Anime

My Hero Academia has been one of the most popular animes in the world for the last few years. The series takes place in a world where most of the population has some sort of superpower or “quirk.” And for those with strong enough powers or enough motivation, super heroics (or super villainy) are real careers kids can go to school for. Deku and his friends attend such a school. It’s a little classic superhero comic, a little high school drama, and all shonen anime goodness.

So it’s not surprising that Netflix had its sights on My Hero Academia as one of its next live-action attempts. They’ve been trying to make fetch live-action anime happen for some time now, after all. We all remember their almost offensively bad take on Death Note, right? Our expectations were low, and they still managed to disappoint us. More recently, the streaming giant produced a live-action version of Cowboy Bebop which was met with mixed reviews and was ultimately not renewed for a second season. Personally, I think that the crew of the Bebop may have shown us the best possible live-action adaptation Netflix could ever hope to make – and it couldn’t quite cut it.

Most recently, Netflix has been busy producing its live-action take on One Piece. The sets so far look good, the actors all seem on brand and excited for their characters, and manga artist Eiichiro Oda is heavily involved. But it’s hard not to be dubious at best.

My Live-Action Hero Academia

This week Netflix and Legendary Entertainment announced that their next attempt at the genre will be with the animated super teens of My Hero Academia. Not a whole lot is known about the project at this time. It’s apparently been in the works for a little while not but seems to only recently be getting off of the ground. There aren’t even any casting decisions to announce yet.

We do know, however, that Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Joby Harold will be writing the screenplay while Sinsuke Sato (Alice in Borderland, Bleach) will be directing as well as executive producing the project. Fans of these people and their work may find some hope in their attachment to the upcoming Netflix project. But Kenobi was another show that fans met with mixed feelings, and many people specifically took issue with the writing.

But as of right now, we know that Netflix will continue making live-action anime adaptations for the foreseeable future. How will My Hero Academia turn out? Only time will tell, but we’ll be sure to have more information here as more becomes available.

How do you feel about Netflix’s live-action anime adaptations? Will you be giving My Hero Academia a chance? What do you think of the team they’ve assembled so far? Let us know in the comments!
