Merry Christmas – We Dare You to Survive The Star Wars Christmas Special
MERRY CHRISTMAS! Can you survive the Star Wars Holiday Special? You may need to spike the eggnog to give you extra-strength.
Behold the bane of George Lucas, the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special!
It was November 17th 1978, and CBS was desperate to attract young viewers. While this youtube video is only 15 short minutes edited down from the full 98 minutes, it still gives you a sense of the absolute craziness that made it to the small screen. It is still regarded as one of the most terrible things ever to get put on TV. Here’s the Wikipedia rundown of how the world reacted to Lucas’ masterpiece:
“The Star Wars Holiday Special was universally lambasted by critics, audiences, and Star Wars fans alike. Jerry Buck, in a November 1978 review for the Associated Press, called the program “bubble gum for the brain”. Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club wrote, “I’m not convinced the special wasn’t ultimately written and directed by a sentient bag of cocaine.” David Hofstede, author of What Were They Thinking?: The 100 Dumbest Events in Television History, ranked the holiday special at number one, calling it “the worst two hours of television ever”. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film received 25% approval rating, based on 16 reviews, with an average rating of 3.4/10.”
Extra points if you make it all the way through.
