Veterans are so last season. Age of Sigmar’s new General’s Handbook means we’re all about Galletian Champions now.

The next season of warfare is almost upon the Realms, and the battle has moved out of the cramped tunnels into the fields above. Here, veteran units are of little use, and the time has come for heroes to step forward again. In game terms, that means the rise of Galletian Champions, a new special unit type that is taking the focus of the next season. These are any on-foot Heroes with less than 10 wounds, representing the stand-out lieutenants of the more powerful generals. Each Champion can bring a retinue along with one of the new battalions, and they get a ton of special bonuses.

But which factions will benefit the most from these changes? While I may not be the most meta-forward player, there are a few top contenders in my mind, with Champions to spare for the new season.

Slaves to Darkness

This is probably the most obvious choice, given that the entire lore of the warriors of Chaos revolves around champions trying to prove themselves in the eyes of the gods. Chaos has some great infantry heroes that fit the bill perfectly, and a ton of hard-hitting units to back them up as Bodyguards. A few of the Slaves to Darkness units even get the benefits natively, without the addition of a battalion, making them the perfect candidates for Champions. However you choose to play this army, you’ll probably be able to find worthy heroes (or should that be villains).

Stormcast Eternals

Just like their Chaos counterparts, the Stormcast are lousy with perfect infantry heroes to represent Galletian Champions. Almost all their infantry commanders have a strong baseline of combat and support abilities, and Stormcast is built on the power of their infantry units. Because of this, there’s no shortage of Sworn Bodyguard units in the army. Stormcast will probably stand at the top of the new meta in short order. Not that that’s any surprise, SCE are one of the top armies in the game, but it’s nice to know they won’t be knocked out by a rules technicality.

Daughters of Khaine

When it comes to infantry armies, they don’t get much gnarlier than the ladies who lacerate. The Daughters of Khaine are full of deadly infantry heroes, and tons of units to back them up as bodyguards. The Melusai are of special mention here, but any of the units work perfectly. A Slaughter Queen with a bodyguard of Witch Aelves will make short work of whatever you point them at, to say nothing of a squad of Melusai.

What heroes are your favorites?
