Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed to get a booster shot of 80s nostalgia and more in their upcoming DLC.

Illfonic’s Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is an asynchronous multiplayer game that delighted Ghostbusters fans everywhere. The game was written by husband and wife duo James and Elyse Willems, hosts of the gaming YouTube channel FunhausThe story takes place after Ghostbusters Afterlife; players fill the role of a new recruit who joins after Winston reopens. The main voice cast is stellar – Dan Aykroyd returns as Ray Stantz and Ernie Hudson is Winston Zeddemore. Rahul Kohli (iZombie, Midnight Mass) joins the cast as John H. Tobin, plus Shara Kirby as Catt, Mike Haimoto as Eddy, and Greg Miller as a ghost with an unknown name.

The game is a 4 vs 1 match in which four Ghostbusters work together to catch a ghost before they successfully haunt the location. It can be played solo or with up to 5 players in one match. It’s a great time with friends and is filled with unlockable customization options, gear, and ghosts. The game also has online crossplay across all devices. Illfonic has been hard at work bringing some balance to the game since its release. The great news is we finally have more news on the game’s upcoming free DLC.

“Get Her. That Was Your Whole Plan. Get Her.”

On Wednesday, Illfonic hosted a Twitch stream to show off the new DLC. Before it started, they let everyone know that they’re releasing four limited-time skins called the Necroplast skins. February 1st through the 16th, the DLC will be given away as Twitch Drops during participating live streams and players will need to link their Twitch to their Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed account to get access.

Lava Slime... Lavime

Lava-tastic!

The outfits are specifically for the starting Ectoplast ghost-type. The game also features Slimer among the unlockable ghosts in that class. The ghosts have a lava-like look that’s really cool to look at. These are a limited-time thing and who knows if they’ll be unlockable afterward. Keep your eyes peeled in February starts – these aren’t actually part of the main DLC changes.

The big change for ghosts now is the “Ghost Remanifestation” option. When a player plays a ghost, they can pause and select a new ghost they want to use if they’ve been caught. This feature will add a whole new layer to playing the ghost and can be used right after capture and before you use the rift. You know, in case you change your mind right then and there. The rest of the ghosts’ changes are minimal. The Ghostbusters, on the other hand, have a ton of new things.

Gear

The developers went on to explain the newest secondary gadgets the Ghostbusters will use, plus a brand new feature on the PKE Meter. The first is called “Belt Gizmo” and hides the player from the ghost’s Ectovision. It’s a passive gadget, so you don’t need to activate it or worry about the battery life. Be careful, though. It doesn’t hide you if your fear is high. The next gadget is the “Disruptor Pylon” and its main function is to stop ghosts from possessing things in an area. It’s got battery life and will zap anyone and anything possessed it detects. But the more it zaps, the faster the battery drains. It can also be sabotaged by the ghost if spotted.

The most interesting new attachment to the gear is the “Ecto Zapper.” It first appeared in Ghostbusters Afterlife as a modification to the PKE meter that made it a Ghost Taser. It replaces the default PKE Blast, which stuns ghosts, and forces them out of possessed items. An upside to the Ecto Zapper is that it has a smaller cooldown, and if a ghost tries to fly through you when it is active they get stunned. The downside? You can’t search for ghosts while it’s active. This would definitely be a great bit of gear to have half the team use while the other half works on something else.

Then there’s a new thing called “Gear Shells,” which let you add your upgrades to the Proton Pack and Trap. You can still keep the look of the original pack if you want to. This is something I have wanted for this game forever – I adore the look of the default Proton Pack from the movies.

The Real Ghostbusters

The absolute coolest thing they showed off were the unlockable skins for the Proton Pack, the Neutrona Wand, PKE Meter, and the Ghost Trap. These skins will make them look like the gear from The Real Ghostbusters cartoon! They most likely can be unlocked through the set of challenges to do to get Research Contracts.

We now return you to the Real Ghostbusters!

On top of the packs being unlockable, devs also announced that they’ve added new customization options for the Ghostbusters. You’ll be able to drastically change the faces to make more unique-looking characters than before. People already attempted to use the original customization to make the four Ghostbusters (with varying success). This is exciting; with those new features came new accessories, plus hair for them.

The hairstyles of the four original Ghostbusters (and Janine’s hair from the cartoon) have been added, too. Also included are new accessories, including domino mask-like eyewear, 3-D glasses, Egon’s cartoon glasses, Janine’s cartoon glasses, and more. Now anyone can make any of the five characters from the cartoon in the game!

Other New Customizations and Features

There are non-cartoon customizations coming, too. Like brand-new patches for both the front and side of the Ghostbuster. These will be unlockable via levelling up or contracts done by the player. Once unlocked, they appear in the Firehouse on a corkboard for display, which gives you more reasons to unlock more than just the items you want to wear. The last customization revealed was the Stay Puft hat and jumpsuits that were teased on Twitter. These will be for people who “Tenure” their Ghostbuster. Tenure works like Prestige does in Call of Duty – you reach the max level and reset your character back down to level 1 on everything that isn’t a cosmetic. It’s a great way to give people who play the most a reason to keep playing. These suits are a nice reward for the most die-hard of them.

Lastly, were the minor announcements based on feedback they got from the players. New to the game is the Quick Access Menu, which will make it easier to get to things like Ghost Customization and Gear. Everything else was updated to the civilians’ dialogue to keep them from being too much of the same. There are new intros when the Ghostbusters arrive at the level, and the ability to see cooldowns for things without pulling them out. They also teased the new “Facility” level coming out, which takes place in an abandoned medical facility and its morgue. Unfortunately, that’s all there is to show until the game gets closer to release. There’s no release date for the DLC yet, but it’s very exciting to get more content.

Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed is currently out for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Let us know what you think of all this free DLC shown and if it will get you into playing Ghostbusters Spirits Unleashed!

Don’t cross the streams.
