It might not be the only one, but Axis & Allies stands above the rest of the World War II strategy board games.

If you’re a history buff and a tabletop gamer, you’ve heard of Axis & Allies. It’s the preeminent strategy game for World War II, unless you’re crazy enough to dive into something like Campaign For North Africa. But for the rest of us, Axis & Allies is the way to go.

Axis & Allies Overview

Axis & Allies might seem daunting at first, but it is overall fairly simple. Very basically, it is an area control game. The objective of the players is to control a specific number of countries. The first player to do that wins. Easy, right?

The complexity of the game stems from the different routes to victory that are available to the players. There are multiple viable strategies within the game. Players will have different technologies they can develop, units they can recruit, economic options, and more. However, breakthrough technologies that players will learn are random. This means even the best players won’t be able to repeat their same strategy over and over.

Combat units have unique stats and abilities. Aircraft, submarines, amphibious units, and ground troops will all engage in different ways. But ultimately combat is resolved in the same manner of rolling dice and comparing values. Every combat unit has a combat value and scores a hit if that unit rolls below its attack value. Controlling territory grants that player money to use for developing new technology, purchasing new units, upgrades, and more.

The core rules of Axis & Allies are more straightforward than you might expect at first. But with the high level of variance in the outcome of each turn, it’s a deep strategy game with a very avid fanbase. If you’ve played Risk more times than you can count and looking for an upgrade, you can’t do much better than Axis & Allies.
