Legendary cartoonist Bill Watterson has come out of retirement to tell a dark fable that hits shelves this October.

Over two decades have passed since Bill Watterson closed the book on his beloved Calvin & Hobbes comic. At the time he stated he felt he’d achieved all he could with the medium. He’s put out some one-off comics and illustrations in those years. This is his largest work since retiring in 1995.

The author’s new book, The Mysteries, was created with caricaturist John Kascht. The pair has been working on the The Mysteries for several years behind the scenes. The official blurb paints the picture of a cursed land in need of a hero.

“From Bill Watterson, bestselling creator of the beloved comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, and John Kascht, one of America’s most renowned caricaturists, comes a mysterious and beautifully illustrated fable about what lies beyond human understanding calamities. Hoping to end the torment, the king dispatches his knights to discover the source of the mysterious events. Years later, a single battered knight returns.

“For the book’s illustrations, Watterson and caricaturist John Kascht worked together for several years in unusually close collaboration. Both artists abandoned their past ways of working, inventing images together that neither could anticipate—a mysterious process in its own right.”

The story unfolds over 72 pages filled with compelling black-and-white illustrations. The Mysteries releases on October 10 and is now available for pre-order.
