‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is Getting a New Movie Sequel

Feb 7 2023

Twenty-five years after the last (true) movie and only a year since the Amazon series cancellation, I Know What You Did Last Summer is back!

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. A group of teenagers on a road trip to the beach hit a pedestrian. Rather than get the man help, they attempt to offload the body into the nearby water. But the man is not dead. And while the kids still dump him into the briny deep, the man survives. And one year later, he returns with a hook in hand and a deadly desire for revenge.

The name of the film is I Know What You Did Last Summer. And it forms a sort of trilogy of ’90s slasher franchises, along with Scream and Urban Legend. Like Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer has a script from legendary horror writer Kevin Williamson. And the original film boasts a massive cast including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., and Ryan Phillippe.

Well? Scream is back. In fact, Scream is back twice over. Isn’t it time for a certain someone with a certain hook to return too?

I Still Know What You Did, Like, 25 Summers Ago

Yes, it’s true. I Know What You Did Last Summer is coming back. At least that is the word on the street. An exclusive from Deadline reveals that Sony intends to resurrect the film franchise after the cancellation of the unsuccessful Amazon TV series. This new movie franchise is rumored to have Do Revenge director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directing.

But the biggest question you probably have is about the cast. Well, history appears to be repeating itself there. The short-lived Scream TV series led to a new legacy film. And, while Sony has yet to officially comment, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer will have some familiar faces as well.

Supposedly, negotiations are ongoing for original franchise stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. to return. And, yes, word on the street is that the Scream revival is the inspiration for bringing these stars back to the big screen for another battle with a mysterious hook-wielding killer.

The script is set to be written by Leah McKendrick based on an idea both she and Robinson cooked up. The idea apparently blew studio executives away. If Do Revenge is anything to go by, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer could have some delightfully demented twists and turns for slasher fans.

Passing the Baton

Sony apparently wants the new I Know What You Did Last Summer to act as a means to introduce a new cast of characters. Just like Sidney Prescott, Gail Weathers, and Dewey Cox passed the Scream franchise onto Sam and Tara Carpenter for Scream 6, Sony sees a chance for Julie James (Love-Hewitt) and Ray Bronson (Prinze Jr.) to pass on the old death hook to a new gang of teens.

As for how that will happen, we don’t know yet. But perhaps the creative team will look back to the original 1973 Loid Duncan novel for inspiration.
