If You’re Enjoying ‘Trigun Stampede’, Watch These Five Animes

3 Minute Read
Feb 17 2023

If you’ve been enjoying Trigun Stampede so far, do yourself a favor and watch the original. And these five other animes with the same feel.

Trigun Stampede has been chugging right along. And it has managed to be very similar to the original series while also being very, very different. I’ll probably come back for an entire review and breakdown when the entire series is finished, but in the meantime, I’ll just say that it’s a lot of fun but definitely not just a rehash of the show from the 90s. If you too are enjoying Trigun Stampede so far and want to see more sort of similar shows, here are some suggestions for your next binge-watch.

I won’t be listing the original because that should go without saying. There’s a freebie, go watch the first Trigun. And read the manga while you’re at it.

Cowboy Bebop

I know you’ve probably already seen this one. Everyone’s already seen Cowboy Bebop. But there’s never a bad time to give it a re-watch. It has a lot of the same themes of trying to outrun your traumatic past with a backdrop of bounty hunters and gun fights. It’s also a show that has its dark and heavy moments, but it’s 75% just a lot of fun.

Cannon Busters

This show aired on Netflix for just twelve episodes, and honestly, it deserved so much more. It has all of the desert wandering, weird science and robots, and fun characters that you could ever want. And while I was watching it the first time I remember saying, “Oh wow this reminds me of Trigun.” You may have missed this one back in 2019. And if you did, definitely go back and give it a watch.

Samurai Champloo

These aren’t similar shows in terms of story, location or technology level. But something about the vibe of Samurai Champloo is very similar to that of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. I’m not sure if it’s the level of fun the characters bring to a series that could be otherwise pretty serious or the dynamics between some (but definitely not all) of the characters. But something about Samurai Champloo scratches the same entertainment itch.

Black Lagoon

Like Trigun, Black Lagoon is a story-centered show based in a world where violence and bounty hunting is just the normal. Some of the characters are your normal amount of anime-wacky and the battles are a lot of fun. But the story is still really memorable and powerful. I haven’t thought about this show in years, but it may be worth a revisit.

Gungrave

The best question when considering what else you might enjoy if Trigun Stampede has been for you is, “Did the same guy make anything else?” And he did! Also created by Yasuhiro Nightow, this series features brothers in battle, and oh so many gun fights plus the same art style. At least, the same art style as the original Trigun, which Stampede has been obviously influenced by. There are also a bunch of video games, so even if you never watched this series, you may recognize it from PlayStation 2.

Are you enjoying Trigun Stampede so far? What other shows do you think have a similar feel? Have you watched any or all of the shows on my list? Let us know in the comments!
