Games Workshop has released the rules for the Regiments of Renown. Get ready for some mercs on the tabletop!

The Regiments of Renown are about to go up for pre-order and we’re getting our first look at all their rules — points included! I had my concerns about them. So how do they stack up and are they going to be worth the investment? That’s what we’re going to find out today!

“Those legendary mercenary companies known as the Regiments of Renown are coming to pre-order this weekend, and to use them in your own games of Warhammer Age of Sigmar you’ll need an equally awesome set of rules. Good news – they’re right here to download.”

Point-For-Point

Let’s just start here. Point comparisons seem like a good way to tell if these models might be worth it vs just taking their default options.

  • Elthwin’s Thorns: 310 points vs 330 default = 20 point discount
  • Big Grikk’s Kruleshots: 310 vs 340 default = 30 point discount
  • Vermord’s Shamblers: 180 vs 200 default = 20 point discount
  • Norgrimm’s Rune Throng: 340 vs 370 default = 30 point discount
  • The Coven of Thryx: 300 vs 540* default = 240 point discount
  • Hargax’s Pit-beasts: 290 vs 325 default = 35 point discount

*That’s not a typo. That’s if you include the cost for each Endless Spell. If you just go based off a Magister + Pink Horrors (aka the models in the box) then it’s still a 70 point discount.

Uhh… just based on those numbers there is CLEARLY a winner with these boxes and it’s The Coven of Thryx. I don’t even need to see the rest of the rules to know that something is weird with that box. That should be a red flag but maybe there has got to be something in the rules we’re missing here. What’s the catch here?

Regiments of Renown Rules

Let’s just skip straight to the coven because I want to know what the heck is going on.

Ahhh and there you have it.

Universally, each Regiment of Renown cannot join their “default” army. So if you were thinking “okay, I’ll just add these into my existing/default army at a discount” you actually can’t.

That said if your NOT running a Disciples of Tzeentch army but still playing a Chaos army you totally can add ALL of those models into your army. The Horrors don’t split but getting access to the free Endless Spell cast could totally be worth it.

As for the rest of the units they all have some dirty tricks. If you’re looking to branch out within those Grand Alliances and want some allies these seem like pretty good options. They are cheaper than the default army and they all come with their own special rules. Furthermore, they are a Unified core battalion and so they are just an additional single drop.

If you’ve got the points and want a discount set of models with some extra umph these Regiments are worth a look.
