The final trailer for Renfield is here – it’s all about the world’s worst, blood-sucking boss. Plus, behind-the-scenes details from director Chris McKay.

Bad bosses are the worst, but none are quite as bad as The Prince of Darkness. Along with his dry cleaning, he makes his servants do all sorts of morally questionable things – deliver blood bags to his lair, capture very specific victims/meals, find fabulous red velvet suits, etc. Dracula is a demanding narcissist you can’t say no to… if you want to live. And that’s what Renfield longs to do after centuries of service – live his own life. He wants out.

McKay and Cage on Renfield

Director Chris McKay has been a fan of Renfield and his relationship with Dracula for years – it’s a dynamic he gets to explore in this movie. During a recent interview with Collider, he revealed that he considers Renfield a direct sequel to the 1931 Tod Browning film starring Bela Lugosi and Dwight Frye.

“I kept telling marketing that that’s what we should say, that this is the only direct sequel. I guess you could argue ‘Dracula’s Daughter’ is a sequel… But to me, this is the only real direct sequel with the Dracula and the Renfield of that movie. So yeah, I wish they’d use that in the marketing. I think that would’ve been a funny way of positioning this movie. The longest time between the original movie and the sequel, beating ‘Psycho,’ or whatever. I guess ‘Avatar’ maybe now, since it feels like a long time since the first one.”

A tiny tribute to Browning’s classic appeared in the TV spot last week.

Nic Cage also sat down with Collider to talk about the movie, his take on Dracula, and his love of horror movies – you can read the whole thing here. The actor couldn’t say no to this role, and I’m glad he got the offer. He’s perfect for this dark comedic take on the ancient bloodsucker.

“When do you get a phone call from Universal saying, ‘We want you to play Dracula?’ That’s never gonna happen again. It’s like every, maybe, 100 years?”

In this modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Nicholas Hoult stars as Renfield, the tortured aide to history’s most narcissistic boss, Dracula. Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.

Renfield arrives in theaters on April 14th.
