Warhammer 10th Edition is looming up ahead. What you should buy now that we know a new edition is coming?

It seems from the Adepticon preview this isn’t going to be a super explosion of the army but you can expect a lot of units that are good now might not be too good in the new edition.  This happens with every edition and keeps the whole idea of trying to build a good 9th list less of an ideal with a 10th edition coming.

Start With Buying the Basics

So what do you even buy?  Well I think the answer is pretty simple.  I wouldn’t build anything that is currently “too good” right now because we do have a new edition and most likely a new Dataslate update coming.  This means less of a desire to go out and buy the hottest things on the tabletop and instead look towards armies and unit staples that make sense.

This means looking at some of the simple things and just looking at a new “army”.  Things like basic troop choices, basic vehicle options, and even some of the cooler elite choices in a game.  You know if it is a new plastic it will most likely still stay decent as GW would love you to buy them.

Tip-toeing Through the Armies – What is Safe?

The Imperium

So what armies should we all look at?  Well if you want to go good guys I would look towards Custodes as one of the few cheaper quick options to buy.  All the plastic is pretty new, most likely won’t get updated, and can build a ton of options in the books.  I wouldn’t look at FW if you don’t have any yet as we have no clue what they will do in the new book.  The army is still pretty good in 9th and while might not be the best it can still work well.

On the Marine side of things I think you can always look at some of the newer models that are not part of the little video we saw for 10th.  This of course means Primaris options and any of the newest kits we have available.  I don’t think will see more Dreadnoughts so the Redemptor should be fine to purchase as well as a ton of army boxes that make things cheaper.

Xenos

On the Xenos side of things I probably wouldn’t invest in any Tyranids as it looks like they will have a huge refresh coming.  It doesn’t seem to viable and while they were good in 9th for awhile they have gotten hit and might get hit again as we have seen in the past.  This is something I would hold off on for now unless you get some really insane deals.

The other Xenos is a lot harder as some of them are hard to get – such as Eldar options – and others might be in a weird spot based on how they change up the armies.  I think the safest Xenos purchase that has a ton of plastic is probably Orks.  The current builds of Orks are still good and I expect the army builds to be relevant in the new edition too.  Plus they are a ton of awesome plastic options that can be purchased easily.

Chaos

On the Chaos side of things most of the armies have new plastic so any of them can be fun to invest in.  They are not too good right now but we can always hope 9th update might fix them a bit or 10 does them well.  Plus almost all the troops/elites are in plastic right now.  I think the easiest build is of course World Eaters as their range isn’t big and seems easy enough to get and work on.  Heck it is the one army I am working on right now too.  Plus this army loves Land Raiders and it is nice to actually play one again.

It’s always a weird time when a new edition comes out and trying to figure out if it is worth it to buy something new to work on.  We have a few more months it seems of 9th Edition. While it would be nice to go out, grab the best army, and win with it – edition changeovers are bad times to blow a ton of money chasing the meta to get started winning.  Looking instead at purchasing staples and keeping your hobby money space free enough for that unexpected neat stuff that always accompanies new editions!

Happy gaming & shopping!
