The new Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse trailer reveals Miles’ real challenge. It’s not the villain we’ve been led to believe.

This movie is more extensive than anyone expected. Over 1,000 animators are working on the movie – that’s a record. Those animators are working on 240 characters (the first movie had 40) across multiple spider-verses with multiple animation styles. It’s a lot to get done, and I’m glad the date was pushed back instead of the studio putting out a subpar movie (or overworking all of those artists).

This trailer provides a closer look at some of those 240 characters – including Spot, Hobie Brown, Pavitr Prabhakar, and Ben Reilly. It also gets deeper into the story. Miles isn’t just fighting another in a line of villains; he’s challenged to become the Spider-Man others (namely Miguel O’Hara) think he should be. The Spider-Man so many in the Spider-Verse have become through a shared experience – sacrificing those they care about to save others.

Miles disagrees and isn’t ready to lose his family. He believes he can save them and save the Multiverse, that he can create his own path. Due to this choice, Miles becomes a target of the people he thought he could trust.

Dad Peter Parker in a fuzzy pink robe is the best Spider-Man. That is all.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 arrives in theaters on June 2.
