Games Workshop has released a new Battlescroll to help out some of the lower performing armies. What charges are ahead and will they work?

The Warhammer: Age of Sigmar meta is always shifting thanks to a flurry of Battletomes coming and an active hand by Games Workshop to help re-balance things in the game. Today, they have announced a new Battlescroll to  tweak a few core rules as well as adjust points for a few different armies. Why the changes? They are explained in the latest Metawatch video from GW:

Battlescroll Update March 2023

There are two major changes to the core rules this time around. First up, the Rally command ability has had a new cap of 10 wounds introduced.

This change is an interesting one as it tones down the power of this command ability quite a bit. It does seem like it hits horde units just as much as more elite, multi-wound model units. And really it all comes down to how many 6s you can roll on the Rally to bring those models back anyhow — the more dead models the more chances you have to recover some. Perhaps that’s the point of the cap. It prevents a horde of single wound models from getting back more than 10 in one Rally.

The other major change was to the Arcane Tome universal Artefact of Power. This change means that existing Wizards, Priests, or Khorne heroes can no longer take the Arcane Tome. Any Hero who does take it gets access to Arcane Bolt and Mystic Shield. The only other spells they can get are if you also take the spell lore enhancement and/or take an endless spell in your roster. I know players would give the Arcane Tome to an existing Wizard to net them an extra cast/dispel but this prevents that now.

Aside from those two big changes there’s also a flurry of points adjustments happening:

Why are these points changes happening? It’s in response to the current state of the Meta and the win-rate data:

“In terms of specific factions, both Kruleboyz and Slaves to Darkness have been underperforming on the competitive scene, so they get a round of targeted buffs and points adjustments, respectively. On the flip-side, the arcane might of the Lumineth Realm-lords and Disciples of Tzeentch have seen them take specific points increases, while Beasts of Chaos and Gloomspite Gitz have both seen some early adjustments in the wake of their battletomes.”

Additionally, the Kruleboyz have also gotten a pair of targeted adjustments, too:

Will these change be enough to bring them more inline with the win-rate targets? We’ll have to wait and see. I’m also curious to see what impacts the points adjustments (if any) have on the overall meta. Plus, we’re about to get a pair of new Battletomes hitting the meta and the Seraphon are slated for a massive release after that. It’s going to be an interesting couple of months!
