Critical Role‘s Darrington Press announced a new fantasy RPG, Daggerheart, in their latest “State of the Press” video. Check it out!

During their “State of the Press” Critical Role‘s publishing imprint Darrington Press announced a slew of upcoming games, including not one, but two tabletop RPGs. Including a “fresh new take on fantasy” that is due out much later this year. Big moves and exciting times from the powerhouse design team at Critical Role.

While the details are sparse as of yet, we do know a little about the new games. Not enough to know if Critical Role is gearing up to shove out from under the long, expansive shadow of Dungeons & Dragons, for instance, but enough to get excited for Gen Con and beyond this year.

Critical Role‘s New Fantasy RPG, Daggerheart, and Arc-Based Illuminated Worlds

Darrington Press has been busy as ever, with hot releases like Til the Last Gasp making a splash in the tabletop scene. But, never content to rest on its laurels, the Critical Role-powered publishing imprint is powering through with pizazz. In their latest announcement, we got a look at forthcoming games, including two new tabletop RPGs. Both are aimed at different purposes.

This is already a good sign, because RPGs work better when you know what they’re trying to do. No one system can do everything, at least not without a ton of work. But what are these RPGs, and what purpose do they serve? First up, Illuminated Worlds.

Illuminated Worlds is a d6-powered RPG that’s meant to play fast and furiously. This is an adaptable, “arc-driven” RPG designed to serve a wide variety of settings and genres. From designers Stras Acimovic (Scum and Villainy) and Layla Adelman (The Stygian Library), Illuminated Worlds sounds like it’ll be a real fun time.

And then there’s Daggerheart, the RPG that’s launched at least two different videos from folks wondering if Critical Role is preparing to break from Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons. All this without even being out yet. Or having any more detail other than it’s “a fun and fresh update to the Fantasy genre” and that it promises “long campaign play” and “rich character advancement.”

Of course, long campaigns and character advancement define many an RPG. What will it actually do? We’ll have to wait until Gen Con this year to get a look at it.

The entire video is worth a watch til the very end, though. Seriously. Or just skip to the last 15 or so seconds.
