Afrofuturist TTRPG Into The Mother Lands will now be published by Green Ronin after its previous publisher canceled their contract.

After a surprise meeting that saw Into the Mother Lands lose out on a publishing deal with Andrews McMeel Publishing, owing to that company “winding down” its tabletop RPG ambitions, the afrofuturist RPG has found a new home with Green Ronin Publishing.

Publisher in hand, the RPG will soon be speeding toward a wider release. Here’s a closer look at the details of the announcement.

Into the Mother Lands and Green Ronin Publishing

Green Ronin Publishing announced today that it has signed an agreement to publish CypherCo’s Into the Mother Lands Roleplaying Game. Into the Mother Lands began as a critically acclaimed streaming show in 2020, followed by a $360,000 Kickstarter to bring its Afrofuturist vision to the tabletop as a complete, stand-alone roleplaying game.

The game takes place on Vutoa, a distant world settled by survivors of African Emperor Mansa Munsa’s expedition that left Earth 1,000 years ago. Over the centuries, the descendants of Mansa Munsa have struggled to flourish on Vutoa, a place that was once alien to them but is now home. Players will learn about the diverse cultures of their world, see what terrifying enemies await them, and find out if they can continue to survive on their adopted homeworld.

Green Ronin was quick to clarify their role, stating that the company would only be working on publishing the game and “getting it to the widest possible audience”. Into the Mother Lands will remain a POC created/owned RPG. Which was one of the important parts of the project during its successful Kickstarter.

According to one co-creator Tanya DePass, the new relationship will help the game “reach new players, retailers, and more.”

Now that the game has found a publisher, it seems the long-awaited release will finally get here. Kickstarter backers can expect to see the game first. But not long after, it will be available for wider release.
