Star Wars Celebration: Everything We Learned About the Three New Movies

3 Minute Read
Apr 11 2023

In addition to all of the projects we know are in production, three new movies were announced this weekend at Star Wars Celebration.

Star Wars Celebration 2023 took place in London this weekend, and if you’re a Star Wars fan, it was the place to get all of your galactic news. Of course, this includes lots of announcements for new upcoming Star Wars movies.

Rey’s Return

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel) will direct a brand new film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey. The new film will take place “after the events of Rise of Skywalker” and is set to focus on Rey’s quest to build a new Jedi Order. There aren’t any hints of who the film’s antagonist will be or if the First Order is still active in any corners of the galaxy. But considering Rey’s focus on the force, it seems likely that they aren’t going to be a big bad when we could just see another Sith pop up instead.

Personally, I’m happy to see Daisy Ridley back in the galaxy and would like to see more of the sequel cast again. It’s fair to say that many of us had issues with the sequel trilogy. But few of those issues had anything to do with the actors. After all, there’s only so much you can do with a line like, “Somehow Palpatine returned.” The whole cast deserved better and deserves a chance to shine, and we’re looking forward to seeing Rey again, hopefully with a better script.

Dawn of the Jedi

Going from the latest possible Jedi story on the current timeline to the first, the next upcoming movie will bring us to the “dawn of the Jedi.” James Mangold (Logan) will direct this film… and at this time we don’t know much more about it than that. This movie could focus on the Prime Jedi, the original founder of the Order who lived about 25,025 BBY. The concept of Prime Jedi is one we only know a little bit about in behind-the-scenes tidbits, making this a piece of Jedi lore that we could all learn about together for the first time. But I also wonder if this could go even farther back to the first Force users such as the Bendu.

New Republic

Finally, the third upcoming movie announced this weekend will be a Dave Filoni project focusing on the New Republic. We’ve been spending a lot of time in the New Republic lately with shows like The Mandalorian, so it’s not surprising to see a continued push for stories in this time frame. And there are few who have proven themselves as a Star Wars storyteller like Dave Filoni.

After creating The Clone Wars and Rebels and writing and directing The Mandalorian, it’s fair to say that he’s brought some of the most beloved pieces of Star Wars lore to life. Case in point, he created Ahsoka Tano and I can’t think of another character more universally adored.

Suffice it to say, that while we may not know a whole lot about this movie, I don’t think we have a lot to worry about.

What upcoming Star Wars project are you most excited about? Is there a previously announced movie that you’d like to see an update on? What time period would you like to see a movie set in? Let us know in the comments!

May the Force be with you, adventurers!
