Check under your bed and in your closets – Stephen King’s The Boogeyman is coming to the big screen.

The Boogeyman is a twist on the age-old folktale of the monster that hides under beds and in the closets of frightened children. The tale is about a man dogged by a vicious creature that attacks his family, taking his children one by one. The story was published in 1973 in Cavalier magazine and was later included in King’s Night Shift collection in 1978.

This is the first time it’s been adapted for the big screen. The movie’s director, Rob Savage, looked to classic movies to guide his version of King’s classic tale.

The Boogeyman is a classic horror movie in the mold of ‘Poltergeist’ that has scares and heart in equal measure. I vividly remember the terror I felt reading King’s short story as a kid, and it’s this feeling of childhood fear that I wanted to inspire in cinema audiences around the world. This film was made in collaboration with an incredibly talented team of creatives, and is anchored by wonderful, soulful performances from our incredible cast – I’m in awe of them, truly. We’re incredibly proud of this movie.”

The adaptation tells the story from a new perspective. It focuses on a pair of sisters still reeling after their mother’s tragic death. They find themselves haunted by a sadistic presence in their house that feeds off of their emotions. The siblings must convince their grieving father to help before it’s too late.

The Boogeyman Details

The cast includes Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, David Dastmalchian, Marin Ireland, Vivien Lyra Blair, and Madison Hu. Director Rob Savage (HostDashcam) is helming the project. The script is from Scott Beck, Bryan Woods (A Quiet Place), and Mark Heyman (Black Swan).

“High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims.”

The studio has elevated the movie from a Hulu exclusive to a prime summer theatrical release. Reports say that test screening and express approval from King were behind the change. I can’t help but wonder if the success of Prey and Hellraiser (and horror in general over the last year) also had a hand in the choice.

‘The Boogeyman’ arrives in theaters on June 2.
