The mega-franchise is returning to the big screen, and it’s gotten bigger. Planet Eater bigger. Check out the action in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

This movie is going to be a CG fest packed with huge fights, new characters, and familiar heroes. The seventh live-action in the franchise is based on Beast Wars and is set in the 1990s. The Maximals and Predacons join the Transformers and Decepticons in the battle for Earth. And there are new players in the struggle – the evil Terrorcons and the Chaos Bringer, Unicron. That’s right, Primus’ eternal arch-enemy is the big bad.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts adds characters long time fans will recognize. The trailer features Cheetor, Airazor, and Rhinox of Beast Wars. Some of the bots carry classic names like Battletrap and Wheeljack, but not their forms. Inspiration didn’t just come from the shows and comics; there are nods to the toys in the trailer. Optimus Primal’s double swords are seen in one of the massive battles, which are straight from the toy.

Clearly, the folks working on this are fans, and they know their stuff. Maybe it’ll be better than the last five (I’m not counting Bumblebee, which is fantastic) movies in the franchise. Maybe. I’m hoping, but the bar is very low. Using a song from 1998 to rep 1994 in the trailer doesn’t help. The early ’90s were not lacking in great hip-hop, folks. They could have also used this chart topping song or this one or this. Lots to choose from.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Cast & Details

The cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal, Peter Dinklage as Scourge, Pete Davidson as Autobot Mirage, John DiMaggio as Stratosphere, Cristo Fernández as Wheeljack, John DiMaggio as Stratosphere, and Michelle Yeoh Maximal Airazor. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is directed by Steven Caple Jr. (Transformers: Earthspark). Michael Bay is (of course) an executive producer.

Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new faction of Transformers – the Maximals – to join them as allies in the existing battle for earth.
