Warcry has a new boxed set out and we’re tearing into the box to see what we can see from Games Workshop’s Nightmare Quest!

Warcry: Nightmare Quest is currently up for pre-order and it continues the campaign/story of the adventures in the Gnarlwood. If you haven’t been keeping up on the lore front, basically a Seraphon celestial ship crashed in the realm of Ghur.

It’s Old One magical artifacts have packed some potent power and have warped the surrounding lands into what is now known as the Gnarlwood. However, the rumors of these ancient relics buried deep in the heart of the Gnarlwood have lured many warbands to deadly living wood. While the remains of the Seraphon crew have struggled to keep the invaders at bay Warbands have been getting closer and close.

You can read even more about it in one of our previous articles here

These events have also been chronicled in the Warhammer Underworlds set, too. But basically Nightmare Quest continues the exploration that was launched with the Heart of Ghur set. So with all that backstory out of the way let’s dive into the box!

Warcry: Nightmare Quest Unboxed

The box contains everything you see above. What does all that entail exactly? Well, you’re getting two new Warcry Warbands, including their respective cards, a board to play on (which matches the previous ones from the Ghur sets), and all the terrain from above, too. You also get the Warband Tome Might and Madness delving into the backstory of each as well as more of the lore of the setting. If you’re brand new to Warcry, this does function as a launching point but you’ll still want to snag a copy of the Warcry: Core Book to get all the rules.

Questor Soulsworn

The Questor Soulsworn are the Stormcast Eternals Warband. It’s their job to enter the Gnarlwood and help protect and defend the Seraphon relics from falling into the wrong hands. Made up of a new Errant-Questors kit, this set features 6 models with a bunch of different options you can build from. Two of the models can also be assembled as Questor Primes and two more can be Knight-Relictors. These models are new and it’s kind of a neat way for GW to introduce the Warband. Rules-wise they have all new warband options on the tabletop as well.

Royal Beastflayers

GW summed this Warband up pretty well by calling them “deluded cannibal ghouls” and this time they’ve brought some new Offal Hounds with them. Again, this is a set of all new models in a brand new warband to play with. All the rules you need to run them are included but I’m still trying to get over how gnarly they look. They are doing the bidding of their vampiric masters but they might also get sidetracked if their hunger takes them for a spin around the jungle.

Gnarlwood Scenery

Additionally, and maybe my favorite part of this kit, is the scenery. The Gnarlwood set expands once again with this release. We’ve see the same style of trees, debris, and bamboo scaffolding/bridges around before. But now we’ve got a new centerpiece with the Realmshaper Engine. Having taken a closer look, this is basically the same footprint as the original kit, but with some clear additions. You don’t have to attach all the bamboo stuff, either. So if you play Seraphon and wanted an alternate version of the Realmshaper Engine this one has you covered!

If you’re in looking to expand your terrain collection or if either of these two warbands interest you then your first crack at them will be in Warcry: Nightmare Quest. It’s up for pre-order and will be in stores this weekend from Games Workshop.

In the terrible and voracious depths of the Gnarlwood, warbands battle over ancient Realmshaper Engines – strange stone ziggurats that imbue the forest with cosmic energies. To meddle with these arcane constructs could unleash catastrophe far beyond the Ravening Ruin, but the deranged ghouls of the Royal Beastflayers believe they are on a quest to save the realm, and will devour anyone who stands in their way. It falls to the heroic Questor Soulsworn – itinerant champions of the Stormcast Eternals, guided by visions and prophecies – to defend the Seraphon relics from those who would defile them.

Warcry: Nightmare Quest brings two new warbands into the Gnarlwood – the elite Stormcast Eternals bound to the Questor Soulsworn, and the ghoulish Royal Beastflayers of the Flesh-eater Courts. The boxed set also includes a ruined and overgrown Realmshaper Engine with a host of modular Gnarlwood terrain, a double-sided game board, a book with background information, incredible artwork, and the rules for both warbands and the included terrain, plus a set of battleplan and warband cards to keep your games running smoothly.
