The Man of Steel hasn’t had a standalone game in over 15 years and David Zaslav thinks it may be time.

DC Comics has some of the most memorable heroes of all time in their catalog of characters. That IP gold mine has gotten many things over the years like cartoons, live-action shows, movies, and video games. They all have varied over the years in quality and, just like comic book movies, were not taken seriously for a long time.

Batman Arkham Asylum changed it all when it came to creating a game that was fun to play, great to look at, and had a story behind it that was also incredible. Many studios have since created incredible comic video games like Marvel’s Spider-Man, Batman Arkham City, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

There are plenty of heroes yet to get their own games and it seems that WB may finally be ready to pull the trigger on games that aren’t just about Batman.

Warner Bros. Can’t Afford to Ignore Video Games

TweakTown and Insider Gaming report that WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently spoke in a Q1 2023 earnings call to talk about the success of WB in gaming. Gaming has done wonders for WB and they need to expand further into their other properties when the time is right. Zaslav pretty much admits that once James Gunn’s Superman movie is made, they want to make sure there is a game ready for it.

“We have a very good gaming business with 11 different studios, and a real talented capability….But the real differentiator for us as a company is that we own our IP. That IP belongs to us, and we’re developing it, and in some cases we may choose to develop it with a third-party game technology company.

“When we launch a product on Max or HBO, and when we have a game, that game belongs to us, but now there’s this in-betweener. It may be in the next couple of years that we launch a Superman movie and…people spend more time and there’s more economics of people just hanging out in the Superman world and universe.

“The fact that we own all of that is something that I think is going to be really important as we look forward–as technology develops, and given the amount of time that people spend on gaming, we don’t want to be in the motion picture and longform storytelling business and have somebody else in the business of hanging out in those worlds. Those worlds are going to be quite profitable in the years ahead.”

Zaslav is very candid in how he speaks about bombshell reveals, like when he nonchalantly brought up MK12 during another presentation. They are no-brainers to him and that is actually good news in this case. WB already announced a Wonder Woman game, so it would just make sense to Zaslav to use their IPs in gaming while the iron is still hot. While this isn’t a direct announcement of a game for The Man of Steel, it definitely is a promise that WB will be making more games about more than just The Caped Crusader.

Superman is one of my all-time favorite superheroes and every DC fan has watched every gaming conference and comic convention just hoping for that announcement to come. There are rumors about it constantly over the years with some leaked pitches given to WB over the years trying to get one made. Fans were hoping Rocksteady would be doing one with all the mentions of Metropolis and more in Arkham Knight, only for it to be a Suicide Squad game. The same can be said for fans of the Flash, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and more. They are begging WB to just let them take their money and seems like they may finally get their wish.

Zaslav seems to be certain that gaming is important to make them money, so at this point, it is just waiting to see what gets announced from WB’s IPs and hoping Superman finally gets to soar again in gaming.
