The wind of change is blowing towards your Age of Sigmar battles, and it looks to be a rather chilly one. Let’s talk General’s Handbook 2023-24.

It’s that time of year again, folks; a new edition of the General’s Handbook is right around the corner. Coming hot off the heels of the Galletian Veterans, the warriors of Ghur has made their way out of the tunnels into the frozen realm of Andtor. Before, brave heroes and noble warriors were the name of the game; now, mages of all stripes (and those who hunt them) are at the forefront. Andtor is teeming with barely contained magical energies, and savvy mages will be able to tap into the roiling energy to bolster their own sorcerous might.

The icy realm even offers a new winter-themed Lore of Magic for wizards to take a crack at. There’s a few heroes of the Realms that I think are going to skyrocket to the top of the usefulness charts. After all, this is turning into a mage’s playground.

Gaunt Summoners

The poster critters of the new handbook, the Gaunt Summoners are the undisputed rulers of infantry-level Chaos Magic. They can summon Daemons to the battlefield, twist their enemies into shapes more pleasing to the Disciples of Tzeentch, and unleash arcane fire to char-broil their enemies. While not the most hardy of mages, they do have an impressing line-up of defenses. With the new Lore of Hoarfrost and the ability to tack on a third spell, these skinny gents are going to see a lot more use in their respective armies.

Slann Starmaster

Coming in just under the required Wound count, Slann are the best at what they do; magic. The oldest beings in the Realms, they protect the ancient sites with earth-shattering power, and that’s going to get turned to twelve in Andtor. While the cold usually isn’t great for Seraphon, it isn’t going to slow these froggy mages down. I predict this floaty boys are going to become an absolute menace on the battlefield.

Slaughterpriests

Ok, so he isn’t even close to a Wizard, but hear me out. The magically-inclined aren’t the only ones getting buffed in the new edition. Non-wizards get access to a new list of artefacts, designed to knock those arrogant wizards off their lofty perch. One even allows non-Wizards to unbind a spell, then keep unbinding every time they succeed. The Blades of Khorne already hates sorcery, and his Slaughterpriests but the fear of the Blood God into anyone who dares cast a spell in their prescence. With the new artefacts, these guys are going to remind the resident mages that not all power is magic. Plus, when everyone is trying to sling spells your way, you’ll want to be near the guy that can eat them for breakfast.

Which hero do you think will rule Andtor?
