It’s hotter than heck out there. Stay cool inside while watching this weekend’s hottest streaming movies and new shows.

Evil Dead Rise – Max

Evil Dead Rise moves the deadites and carnage to the big city. The movie uses the established lore as a jumping-off point and goes somewhere new. It takes place in a run-down apartment building in Los Angeles. The horror begins with an evil book, a record, and some familiar words. A woman and her nieces and nephews are forced to fight off demonic forces they’ve accidentally called up – starting with the kids’ mom.

Infinity Pool – Hulu

If you’re in the mood for something filled with surrealism and body horror, this is for you. From the mind of Brandon Cronenberg…

“While staying at an isolated island resort, James and Em are enjoying a perfect vacation of pristine beaches, exceptional staff, and soaking up the sun. But guided by the seductive and mysterious Gabi, they venture outside the resort grounds and find themselves in a culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. A tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you’ll be executed, or, if you’re rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead.”

Unwelcome – Shudder

Not all monsters are menacingly large. Tiny terrors can be just as deadly.

A couple who escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to discover malevolent, murderous goblins lurking in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden.

Godland – Criterion

From Hlynur Pálmason. If you like P.T. Anderson’s ‘There Will Be Blood’ or Robert Eggers filmography, this is a good choice.

“At the end of the 19th century, a young Danish priest is sent to a remote part of Iceland. The deeper he travels into the unforgiving landscape, the more he loses touch with his own reality, his mission and his sense of duty.

Surrounded – VOD

Michael K. William’s last movie is a western focused on a stagecoach ambush gone wrong. A survivor is forced to hold the man responsible captive while his gang tries to free him. It’s a tale of grit. It also stars Leticia Wright, Jamie Bell, and Jeffrey Donovan.

New Shows

Skull Island – Netflix

A new chapter in that Monsterverse is here. The animated series follows a group of kind-hearted explorers that rescue a woman from the ocean. Their good deed leaves them shipwrecked on the treacherous Skull Island. A mysterious place filled with deadly creatures and terrifying monsters.

The Gold – Paramount+

The series is inspired by true the events surrounding the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery. Six men robbed the Heathrow International Trading Estate, stealing £26 million worth of gold bullion, diamonds, and cash. It remains one of the largest robberies in British history.

I’m a Virgo – Prime Video

From visionary director Boots Riley (Sorry to Bother You).

“A darkly-comedic fantastical coming-of-age joyride about Cootie, a 13-foot-tall young Black man in Oakland, CA. Having grown up hidden away, passing time on a diet of comic books and TV shows, he escapes to experience the beauty and contradictions of the real world. He forms friendships, finds love, navigates awkward situations, and encounters his idol, the real life superhero named The Hero, played by Walton Goggins. I’m A Virgo is a mythical odyssey that questions the purpose of the mythical odyssey.”

The Bear S2 – Hulu

The multi-award winning show is back for another season.

The Bear is about food, family, the insanity of the grind, the beauty of Sense of Urgency and the steep slippery downsides. As the young chef Carmy fights to transform both The Original Beef of Chicagoland and himself, he works alongside a rough-around-the-edges kitchen crew that ultimately reveal themselves as his chosen family.
