The Level Up team has been releasing new planar playtests throughout 2023. The latest adds plant people, new spells, and more!

Level Up: Advanced 5th Edition is one of our favorite ways to add some depth and crunch to the bones of 5th Edition fantasy RPGs. If you’re looking for a system that lets Fighters and Rogues do more than make an attack or three each round, this is it, with fighting styles, martial maneuvers, and more. Also, the math on their manual full of monsters is actually correct, so a CR 12 creature actually hits like a CR 12 creature should. Also, EN Publishing has yet to send Pinkertons after anyone.

And in their latest playtest packet, we get a look at the mechanics of the Level Up cosmos, at least in part. This one, like the one before it in February, is chock full of planar power. Extraplanar adventures are at the heart of it all, from extraplanar origins and cultures to new spells that pull weapons from other worlds. Check it out below!

In the new playtest, you’ll find a variety of options. Some of our favorites include the Fowl Turncoat culture. Hailing from the plane of Vaskrollo, where everyone eventually undergoes a Circean transformation into an animal. And while Fowl Turncoats are technically any sort of avian creature, why would you make an interplanar hero that wasn’t a duck person?

With abilities like Planar Explorer which make it easier to fight off planar magic; Traitorous Talent (which reflects the fact that you’re secretly undermining the Avian Empires); or Eat Feces, Fascist, which grants expertise when attacking authority figures like guards, knights, nobles, soldiers, and especially royalty; the Fowl Turncoat culture is a lot of fun to play with.

You can also play as a Plantfolk, hailing from the plane of Plantasia with a wide variety of options available to you. At higher levels you might be able to Speak With Plants or exude spores to cast the Sporesight spell, allowing you to see in different places.

Speaking of spells, there are plenty of new spells to play around with. From Cantrips all the way up to the 8th-level spell Summon Forgotten God which lets you call forth a forgotten god from a plane of horrors to devastate your foes.

Finally, there are two new Artificer options, as well as a Wizard tradition all about living in a big city. All of this, you can check out at the link below!

Let’s not forget the incredible Transform Head spell, which transforms someone’s head into a small or tiny item for 24 hours.
