D&D: Today’s New Unearthed Arcana Will Roll Back Subclass Level Changes

WotC will roll back a few of its proposed changes in a new Unearthed Arcana dropping later today. Here’s a look at what else we know.

Dungeons & Dragons has been going through an identity crisis as the developers try to update the game into a new edition without actually making it a new edition. We’ve gotten to see a lot of what they’re thinking, a lot of the rules and ideologies up for playtesting. Though for right now, the “new ideas” phase is over.

Now it’s just refining what they have. And for now, that means rebalancing subclasses, so now all subclasses start at level 3, but then continue at the various levels that they were in the 5E handbook, meaning Rogues have to wait six levels before getting a second subclass feature. While Warlocks and Wizards get theirs a scant three levels to pick up their subclass picks.

This is a move away from the previous “standardization of subclasses.” Which before, Jeremy Crawford had said the community was “tepid” after the playtesting audience failed to comment on the plan. Though this may have been because WotC never asked the community what they thought of the subclass standardization.

But this is far from the only change. Here’s a look at what we know so far.

New Unearthed Arcana Later Today – Rolling Back and Maybe Forward

This will be the biggest Unearthed Arcana yet. This time features seven different classes, revised spells, multiple subclasses. And the first look at the new Monk.

All of which is fairly exciting. Though to make room for the new, some of the old new changes have been rolled back. Including Epic Boon Feats, which had previously replaced so-called “capstone abilities”. It’s worth mentioning that what happens at 20th level is, by and large, meaningless to the game of D&D.

Unless WotC changes things with their new edition that they don’t want to call a new edition, it will remain meaningless. After all, campaigns rarely reach the higher levels, let alone level 20. But now capstone abilities will be back at level 20. Check back later in the day for an update on the new Unearthed Arcana!

What are you hoping for from the new Monk?
