Pathfinder revealed a spate of animalistic new playable ancestries for its upcoming Howl of the Wild sourcebook in 2024. Badgers everywhere.

Alright, this one goes out to all of you furries and closeted furries out there who are either keeping the internet from actively catching on fire and burning down or will one day step up to take those places, making an inordinate amount of money so you can commission that sweet sweet furry art and everyone else can keep enjoying the internet.

Pathfinder’s new book, Howl of the Wild features a number of animal-centric new playable ancestries. Including Minotaurs, Centaurs, Merfolk, Athamaru (fish-like amphibian people), Surki (insectoids), and of course, Awakened Animals. What more could you possibly want?

Howl of the Wild – Can’t Spell “Adventure” Without “Nature”

Howl of the Wild was announced earlier this year. It’s the upcoming 2024 book that’s focused on animal adventurers and the things they do. It will center around the crew of the Zoetrope, a band of explorers who are looking for the Wardens of the Wild, to make sure Golarion’s biomes are all taken care of.

What does that mean for you? A lot of nature. And a lot of adventure, which you can’t spell without nature, otherwise, you just get “dve”. Nobody wants to be a driver. In the forthcoming rulebook, in addition to all the new nature magic and options, are a spate of new playable ancestries.

Some might be familiar, like Minotaurs and Centaurs. But Pathfinder recently unveiled four new animal ancestries, the Merfolk, pictured above, the Athamaru:

These amphibious people are “highly communal […] with a more physical bent” that could include keeping coral symbiotes, pheromone communication, or training pet eels to provide aid.

Surkis, on the other hand, are subterranean insectoid people, who love to burrow beneath Golarion’s surface, coming up only for generational events. They absorb magic and metamorphose later in life (read: at higher levels), with unique adaptations, depending on what they absorb.

Finally, Awakened Animals. These are “highly versatile” new ancestries that will allow you to play an animal that has become sapient. In other words, you can be a badger or a bear or anything else that fits in the rules.
