D&D: Five Ways to Declare Your Independence

When in the course of a D&D game, it becomes necessary to declare your independence, here are five great ways to do exactly that.

We’ve all been there. You’re playing a D&D game, y’know, like normal. And then it takes a turn. You’re not sure who started it. But now instead of trying to rescue a kidnapped princess, you’ve taken up arms trying to tear down the monarchy that would have forced her to marry against her will.

You’ve decided that the king’s taxation has been entirely without representation. And so now you have a revolution on your hands. You just need the right method to declare your independence for all who care to hear it.

Skywrite

When you’re dissolving the political bands that once connected you to each other, you may as well do it big enough that everyone knows. Without a mass-communication network such as the wire service or internet, though, spreading the good word of your independence might be much harder.

Unless you write it in the sky for all to see, of course. This is where the Skywrite spell comes in handy. Now, Skywrite isn’t permanent, and it will absolutely make you choose your words carefully since Skywrite only allows for ten at a time. They do last for an hour and are written in the sky.

Get multiple casters for a longer declaration (in terms of words), and let all the peasants for miles around know that they’re free. Y’know, if they can read.

Illusory Script

Of course, that might backfire. The King might have an army to back up all those tax collectors. So maybe you want to make your declaration hidden, at least at first. Maybe you want only select people to know that you’re planning a revolution.

When secrecy is a must for your declaration of independence, Illusory Script has got you covered. This spell allows you to magically conceal a text, causing the words to appear as gibberish, a different language, as though they were written by someone else, or to appear as an entirely different message altogether. This lets you hide your plans in plain sight, except for a select group of people.

Tongues

What if you want to make sure everyone understands your declaration of independence? That’s where the Tongues spell comes in. This spell allows whoever you choose to perfectly understand any language spoken to them at any given time. It also lets their words be understood by anyone who speaks a language.

So with this spell, you can ensure your message is not just heard, but understood by whoever you want.

Glibness

Of course, if everyone’s going to be understanding what you say, you may as well try and say it as best as possible. That’s where Glibness comes in handy. This spell grants you powerful boons when it comes to speaking persuasively (or making any other kind of Charisma check). Just mix in Glibness and you’ll always have at least a 15 on whatever Charisma check you’re making.

Glyph of Warding

Finally, what better way to declare your independence than by doing so explosively. With the Glyph of Warding spell, you can weave an explosive glyph right into the very text that decrees which truths you hold to be self-evident.

Set the right triggers for the spell, and it will explode dealing fire or acid damage to whoever reads it without authorization.

Of course, there are plenty of other options, but these five are all pretty surefire.
