Goatboy’s Warhammer 40K: Hobby Paralysis – What Should You Do Next?

Goatboy here and 40K 10th Edition hs a lot of us hobby-paralyzed. Here’s what to do next to keep it fresh.

I am at a weird stage in my hobby nonsense.  I don’t know what to work on next.  I have client work keeping me busy but I normally like to throw myself something to keep my own hobby progress moving.  But right now, 40K 10th edition and the lists I like to play – aren’t really doing it for me.

What do you mean melee sucks!?

If you’ve been reading me for a while you know that type of lists I like to play.  I like big assault nonsense that is trying to get to you fast, punch you quickly, and win with movement into your business. Right now, that type of army isn’t very good beyond some of the Adeptus Custodes and rolling a ton of 4+ saves.

Of course as I write this, I expect 10th edition to shift more as we continue to play test the rules, the units, and just how the tabletop meta will be working.  It is an interesting time at the very start of a new edition. There is always a hope of the game moving to a really interesting more balanced meta.  But will leave that discussion for when the index FAQs come and other “shifts” in the game. Where it can be frustrating – is when you want to build something new – and have no idea which way to go. Hobby paralysis can set in.

I’m Hobby Paralyzed

Still, it just kind of sucks, as right now, I don’t really want to work on a new army.  The last army I finished for myself (World Eaters) is just not that good, which frustrates me as I never got to play it at an event and really only got it on the tabletop once.  I hope it comes back decent later on, but I get the feeling my crazy Khorne jerks are going to be sleepy for a while.

So where do I go?  Do I decide to eff the competitive heavy side of myself and just make something that’s looks cool?  Do I just work on the hobby and leave the events as a hang-out time instead of trying to win more than lose?  Is it worth it to really push hard when you are already handicapping yourself by not playing the “good armies” for right now?

I think the real slow roll of 10th Edition codexes is going to make the game a weird one for a ton of players.  If your index is nice and tight  – you can compete. Congratulations!  But if you are running something outside the top tier factions right now, your hobby effort doesn’t make a difference.  This makes it rough for hobbyists. While I applaud all those players who stick with it,  it does limit what armies new people might want to get into.

GW Needs to Step In Regularly

I do hope we see GW do frequent updates to cards, units, and more.  Going all regular digital updates to the non “release” codex armies would be a great way to keep the game fresh and balanced.  It also lets GW test some big picture faction ideas before they release them in a true print fashion.  Heck, we are dealing with how Eldar probably need that tweak, but it could to be a long time coming.

Of course if you are playing Marines or Nids you wont be waiting long.  Those new Tyranids look pretty neat even though we didn’t get a Knight-sized Norn Queen thing. Hopefully the Tyranid codex still has some surprises.

When In Doubt – Display Board It Up!

I am left wondering what to work on next. But don’t despair for Warhammer always has one guaranteed option for you when you have no idea where to turn for hobby satisfaction. A BADASS display board! I think I really want to work on a cool display board option that is both transportable to far-away events, easy enough to move between tables, and looks good.  The looking good is the most important thing but all the others need to matter. So pull our those bits, grab a board, some foam, and get creative! The sky the limit on cool display boards and other is no wrong answer!

Here’s Abe’s Guide to Budget Hills to get you started.

Is it time to finally except I am an art/model making Goatboy that isn’t too terrible at the game?

Is the hobby side the most important or is it crushing fools with your superior army choice?
