Pazuzu is back and so is one of his most powerful enemies: Chris MacNeil. Check out the first trailer for The Exorcist: Believer.

50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror movie in history arrived in theaters. The Exorcist, based on the best-selling book by William Peter Blatty, shocked audiences around the world. Its special effects and combined performance of Linda Blair and Mercedes McCambridge as Regan MacNeil convinced many what they were seeing on screen was real.

The movie helped kick off the Satanic Panic that would last another two decades and change the horror genre forever. Its success led to five sequels and a television series.

The Exorcist: Believer

This October, on Friday the 13th, a new chapter begins when two girls encounter a powerful demonic force. When parents don’t find medical answers to their daughter’s plight, they turn to someone who has battled this before–Chris MacNeil.

The Exorcist: Believer marks Ellen Burstyn’s return to the franchise for the first time since the original was released in 1973.

This is a remix rather than a remake. The story is only recognizing William Friedkin’s classic and doesn’t include Pazuzu, the demon from the other movies. Chris MacNeil is at the center of it just as much as the possessed girls. Director David Gordon Green confirmed:

“We use a new demon, no Pazuzu. We feature a demon who studied demonologists might know. Our film asks some questions, gives some answers, but doesn’t spell it all out.

“What I was really moved by was the mother-daughter story and bringing that up to speed, up to date, and bringing Chris MacNeil back after so many years.”
