Baldur’s Gate 3 has gotten its first major patch—Patch 1—and with it, comes slightly less accidental romance, among other things.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 1 is here, and it is a doozy. This massive patch contains fixes for “over 1000 bugs, balancing, flow issues, and more.” Patch 1 is a major undertaking, with a fix in nearly every area of the game.

But players will be especially delighted to find that a significant number of changes come to the menagerie of companions you can recruit to your party in Baldur’s Gate 3. Patch 1 makes the bounds between flirtatious conversation and romance a little clearer, which Larian Studios says might make players a little less likely to accidentally wind up in a romance with Gale. As though that were somehow a bad thing.

Fair warning though, the patch notes, in addition to being so extensive that they exceed Steam’s text limits, do also contain spoilers for the game. We’ll be going through some of the highlights, so consider yourself warned.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – Patch 1: Stop Accidentally Romancing The Wizard

As previously mentioned, Baldur’s Gate 3, Patch 1 is massive and touches nearly every area in the game. Players who have had progress stymied by crashes will be pleased with Larian’s “Showstoppers”:

  • Fixed a bug where listening in on a conversation as Player 1 and then exiting the dialogue prematurely could result in not being able to interact with anything anymore.
  • Fixed an issue causing the Reaction UI to not work correctly and potentially block progress in combat if you save the game in the middle of a reaction.
  • Fixed loot in corpses sometimes not appearing in multiplayer until an item is dragged onto the corpse.
  • Fixed a bug causing you to get a Game Over screen after helping Downed party members.

But the biggest changes are to “story flow and logic” which include fixes to Wyll’s personal quest:

  • Wyll should be able to talk about Ravengard being at Moonrise Towers, and will no longer have an exclamation point above his head without having anything new to say.
  • Wyll should now be able to tell you what to do next if Ansur is killed and he has an exclamation mark above his head.

As well as a fix for Gale’s flirty nature:

  • Made it less ambiguous that you’re starting a romance with Gale when choosing certain dialogue options.
  • During Gale’s spell-teaching scene, you now have the option to picture a future with Gale that falls somewhere in between kissing him and kicking him in the head.

Those trying to play through the game just to see the story will be pleased to learn that Explorer Mode has gotten a boost. Players in that difficulty setting now have twice as many bonus HP. Arcane Tricksters have gotten a few buffs to make Mage Hand Legerdemain and Invisibility a little better for them. And perhaps most importantly of all, “Fish vendors now have more fish to sell.”

And according to Larian, Patch #2 is “around the corner”!
