Games Workshop is spilling the biomass on the new Tyranid Codex. Get ready for some new adaptations from the Hive Mind.

There’s a brand new Tyranid Codex on the way and today we’re getting our first real previews direct from Games Workshop. The first thing to note is that on top of the Invasion Fleet Detachment, there are five more to choose from. And each one is bringing something special to the tabletop.

via Warhammer Community

“Each Detachment offers your army unique benefits: a Detachment rule, four Enhancements, and six Stratagems. While some factions will find that the Detachment from their Index changes slightly when their Codex arrives, this is not the case for the Invasion Fleet, which functions exactly as it does now. “

Tyranid Rules Previews

Crusher Stampede

The first new detachment we are getting is a classic — Crusher Stampede. This Detachment Rule is Enraged Behemoths and it helps to curb any degradation effects that might impact your Tyranid Monsters. And if they don’t normally get weaker as they take damage they are just going to be more of a threat now.

This detachment really is a great way to bring back the old Monster Mash lists of old with all the big bugs you can bring. And if you’re worried about scoring objectives that’s okay — they have an adaptation for that…

Ominous Presence should help tip the scales in the right direction for objective control. This Adds 3 to the OC stat! That’s quite a bump and makes these monsters viable in terms of taking contested objectives.

Vanguard Onslaught

Another detachment is the Vanguard Onslaught. This one is geared more for fans of those sneaky units like Lictors, Nuerolictors, and Deathleapers. If you want to sneak in and subtly sabotage your opponent before you strike this is the detachment for you!

Ruleswise the Detachment Rule is Questing Tendrils and it does two main things. Firstly, it allows your Tyranids to charge and in a turn where they Fell Back. Additionally, Vanguard Invaders units can also charge even if they have Advanced this turn. That just makes these creatures extra charge-y.

The second main thing this does is that it allows you to take Deathleaper as your Warlord. This is more a thematic change but it’s pretty cool nonetheless.

Each detachment also has its own enhancements as mentioned above. One example is the Chameleonic enhancement for the Vanguard Onslaught. This provides the bearer with Stealth and also gives any unit it’s attached with the Benefit of Cover, too.

Here’s an example stratagem as well with Assassin Beasts. For one CP you can give a Vanguard Invader Infantry unit Precision on it’s attacks for the melee phase!

More Detachments

“Each Detachment puts a wildly different spin on your battle plans and – since they’re not locked to any particular hive fleet – you can chop and change which one you’re using whenever you like. Perhaps you flood the board with an Unending Swarm of ENDLESS MULTITUDE infantry, build a devouring Assimilation Swarm around a brood of hungry, hungry Haruspexes, or unleash the power of the Hive Mind itself in a Synaptic Nexus.”

Look out for even more tricks from the Hive Mind with the other detachments coming in the new Codex.

The new Codex will be up for pre-order this weekend from Games Workshop!
