Baldur’s Gate 3 is out on PlayStation 5 today. The game is out of preload and now, people around the world who have decided to take their sick day today, are seeing what awaits them once they get captured by Mind Flayers.

Larian CEO Swen Vincke sat down to talk to WotC about the challenges and triumphs of creating Baldur’s Gate 3. Including things like figuring out which spells were going to create the biggest problem. Turns out, the answer was “speak with animals” and “speak with dead”. Find out more about the masterpiece game below!

Baldur’s Gate 3 Deep Dive

Larian CEO Swen Vincke spoke with Wizards of the Coast about the massive undertaking that has been Baldur’s Gate 3. Including giving a peek behind the curtain. Vincke talks about the depth and scale of the game, and the sheer amount of detail put into every permutation of the story. Vincke had a philosophy of “it’s going to be AAA in how it’s presented to you, and hopefully that will draw new people in.”

And to this end, Baldur’s Gate 3 is aimed at hooking in new players. Bringing people who didn’t know they liked this kind of gameplay into the genre. And it’s true, whether it’s people discovering they like turn-based games or people who are now getting into D&D for the first time, new folks are stumbling into the rabbit hole.

Vincke says that the biggest reason for this is “trusting the dice.” Which he said means letting the complexities of the rules become approachable, so players can see “I’m rolling a die” and then letting the result of the check immediately influence how the cinematic unfolds.

These dialogue choices and their immediate changes/responses, encourage players to dig into the mechanics of the game. Vincke says many players restart after their first playthrough hits Act 1, as players realize the myriad things they can do. Mastering the game’s systems is a reward unto itself.

Vincke also talks about the big changes that have hit in the new patch. There are new endings to the game that have come out over the course of the last week. These will be waiting for the PlayStation 5 players who are diving into the game anew. Karlach gets justice, as do some other NPCs without giving too much away.

SUBLIME!
