The secret to any RPG is finding the right kind of weird little guy to befriend the party. And in D&D, that’s no different.

RPGs are all about weird little guys. Whether it’s befriending them, adopting them, or doing weird little quests for them to help them with their weird little tasks. And D&D being one of the oldest RPGs, is no stranger to this at all.

Though it’s had a tumultuous relationship with weird little guys, there’s no denying it. Find all the best adventures, and you’ll find weird little guys. From Meepo the Kobold to that one Goblin from the Lost Mines of Phandelver, there are plenty of weird little scared guys out there. And here are some of our favorites from the collected works of 5E.

Kobolds

Okay, this list wouldn’t be the list it is if we didn’t include Kobolds on it. They’re among the most pathetic little monsters in the manual. To the point where they had to write a whole article to convince people that they weren’t, and for a while the legend of Tucker’s Kobolds made people wary of them. But just look at these little jerks.

They are among the weirdest little guys. And we can all but guarantee that if you put one that’s a little more pitiful than the rest in any encounter, the party will adopt it, no questions asked.

Treant Sapling

Proving that being a weird little guy isn’t so much a function of size, as it is inner nature, a Treant Sapling is one of the best weird little guys in D&D.

These are, as the name suggests, young Treants. While they are tougher than you might expect, they’re also quite strange and curious. They have the ability to animate nearby trees and can speak with many different woodland creatures. And just look at them.

Imp

These are literal devils who hang out and try to tempt mortals. Sure, following their advice might see your soul condemned to the Nine Hells, but just look at how cute they are. And how useful they can be.

Especially since they can become invisible at a moment’s notice. But also might have trouble picking up that coffee cup you desperately want them to grab.

Juvenile Mimic

One day, this tiny little guy will grow up to be a bloodthirsty treasure chest. But if you manage to pick them up when they’re just weird little guys, a Mimic can be a friend for life.

Who knows, one might end up following you to the ends of the earth and beyond. Dozens of tiny legs echo horrifically across the cosmos as it tries to find the people who cared for it when it was just a weird little fake treasure chest.

Hollyphant

These are weird little magical elephants who come with wings and can fly around. They are gentle, stalwart, and sweet. Their whole deal is that they’re so good, that they roam the winged halls of Celestia, acting as messengers and helpers.

Of course, they make the perfect weird little guy to join your party.

What are your favorite weird little guys?
