This week’s episode of Ahsoka was called, “Fallen Jedi.” And there were quite a few fallen Jedi to speak of.

This week on Ahsoka everything is coming to a head and the New Republic is on the precipice of another war. But how did we get here? And where do we go from here? Here’s the Ahsoka episode 4, “Fallen Jedi” breakdown.

In order to break down this episode of Ahsoka, I’ll need to spoil large portions of what happened this week. If you haven’t watched the episode yet, proceed at your own risk.

Heir to the Empire

The episode opens on the same forested planet Ahsoka Tano, Sabine Wren, and Huyang crash-landed on in the last episode, and everyone is trying to get the ship back up and running and contact Hera with an update. It’s not going well.

Ahsoka says that with the map in their enemies’ hands, it may be time to make sure that nobody can follow the coordinates. This unfortunately includes and means giving up finding Ezra Bridger. This isn’t a plan that Sabine likes, but Ahsoka says that she’s sure of this choice if the alternative is Thrawn returning to become, ‘Heir to the Empire.’

Heir to the Empire is the title of the first book in the original Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn. It follows Luke, Leia, and Han (as well as the budding New Republic of the Legends timeline) as that version of Thrawn attempts to rebuild a fleet and eventually the Empire under his own command.

Inquisitor Dust

Sabine and Ahsoka are interrupted by an attack by the mysterious inquisitor Marrok as well as Shin. And while Sabine is mostly evenly matched with Shin, Ahsoka makes very fast work of defeating Marrok… who then seems to explode into inquisitor dust.

We haven’t really seen much of this in Star Wars, and it led me to believe that while most inquisitors were fallen Jedi who joined the empire, this one may not have been at all. Instead, it seems that Marrok may have been made by Lady Morgan of Nightwitch magic.

The Many Fallen Jedi

This episode’s title was “Fallen Jedi,” and like many episodes the title could be referring to is more than a little vague.

Of course, there are Baylan and his apprentice, Shin. It’s been heavily implied throughout Ahsoka that Baylan is a survivor of Order 66 who once trained as a Jedi in the order but is now on the Dark Side.

There is also Sabine, who seemingly betrays Ahsoka at the last minute, giving the freshly re-acquired map back to Baaylan. This move feels fishy though, and I have a hard time believing that she has actually double-crossed Ahsoka, Hera, and the new republic, even if it was to find Ezra. This feels like a bait-and-switch move to go undercover with team-Thrawn.

Shortly before Sabine’s possible betrayal, Ahsoka literally became a fallen Jedi… When she fell off a cliff. And then she woke up in a place that looked a lot like dark in-between Force Space we saw appear in Rebels only to be greeted by the most infamous fallen Jedi of all, Anakin.

Their reunion seems positive and bittersweet for a moment, but as the episode ends the uplifting Anakin-music transitions ominously to Darth Vader’s theme, leaving us to wonder where this reunion is going and where Ahsoka has found herself.

A Bad Feeling (That May Be Good?)

As all of this is happening and Lady Morgan is firing up the massive ship’s hyperdrive to find Thrawn, Jacen Syndulla tells his mother that he has ‘a bad feeling.’ On one hand, this makes sense. The whole mission has gone belly up and a number of X-Wings have just exploded around them. But coming from Jacen in particular, this may have some extra meaning.

Jacen’s father was Kanan Jarrus, Jedi and master to Ezra. And while we know that Sabine has a very very weak connection to the Force, we don’t know yet one way or another if Jacen has his father’s talent for the Force. But in an episode full of fallen and falling Jedi, I think it’s likely he may be one of the galaxy’s hopeful up-and-comers.

What did you think of episode four of Ahsoka? What do you think will happen in Anakin and Ahsoka’s reunion? Do you think Jacen Syndulla is strong in the Force like his father? Let us know in the comments!

May the force be with you, adventurers!
