Games Workshop has unveiled the four Battleforce Boxes for Age of Sigmar. Which one will you grab this year?

It’s a yearly tradition that Games Workshop creates some amazing holiday boxed sets for Warhammer. Today, we got the reveal of the Age of Sigmar Battleforces and all four of them are quite tempting. If you’re looking to start a new army then any of these Battleforces are the perfect starting point.

Primordial Starhost

Contents:

  • Slann Starmaster
  • 10x Saurus Warriors
  • 3x Kroxigors
  • 3x Aggradon Lancers
  • Hunters of Haunchi (warband of 13 miniatures)

If you purchased any of the Seraphon starter sets or even if you missed them completely, this box is a great option. You’ll have a Slann as the Leader option and lots of solid core units to work with. This set has enough of a spread to allow you to dip your toe into lots of different build options. You can lean into different aspects of the Seraphon army depending on what appeals to you; You’re not beholden to one specific build so this is a great army starter box!

Praetorian Spearhead

Contents

  • Arch-Kavalos Zandtos (can be built as a Liege-Kavalos)
  • 20x Mortek Guard
  • 5x Kavalos Deathriders
  • Gothizzar Harvester
  • 4x Morghast Archai/Harbingers

Much like the Seraphon box this set has quite the spread. You’ve got some heavy hitters included with the Morghasts, a solid core with 20 Mortek Guard and five Kavalos, a Harvester (great for bringing models back), and it’s all led by Zandtos/Liege-Kavalos. If you like the Ossiarch Bonereapers this is a good starting point. Personally, I would have liked six Necropolis Stalkers over four Morghasts, but that’s just me. Everything in the box is useful for the aspiring OBR player.

Warhorde of Eternus

Contents:

  • Eternus, Blade of the First Prince (alternatively a Chaos Lord on Mount)
  • 3x Ogroid Theridons
  • 5x Chaos Knights
  • 5x Chaos Chosen
  • 10x Chaos Warriors

Okay, is GW just making boxes to taunt me for armies that I own and want more of? Because it sure feels like it. Anyhow, this is another solid boxed set for Chaos. WarCom points out that you could build the Eternus as a Be’lakor-loyal force or as a Chaos Lord for an Archaon-loyal army. Either way this box features a wide mix of options. Personally, I’ve found better success with Slaves to Darkness if I focus on a particular playstyle. This leans into the beefy infantry option with a splash of Chaos Knight support. Again, you’re not stuck with “just one build” and can expand in different directions from this box. However, even with the majority infantry choices, this does feel a bit more like a “kitchen sink” of the boxed sets — it’s got a little bit of everything.

Vengorian Court

Contents:

  • Lauka Vai, Mother of Nightmares (or a Vengorian Lord)
  • 5x Blood Knights
  • 20x Deathrattle Skeletons
  • 10x Direwolves
  • 3x Fell Bats

This boxed set wants you to start with a Vengorian Lord as your vampire leader of choice. From there it’s a smattering of unit options. Just like the other boxed sets this is a very generalized set of options and it’s not really optimized for any one army pick. That’s not a bad thing; just know that going in! Regardless of which vampiric legion you join you’re going to need to get more of that option — more Knights, Skeletons, or Direwolves. Personally, I’d either lean hard into Direwolves and the Vangorian or the Blood Knights. I like the new zombies over skeletons but both are excellent tarpits. And Fell Bats are actually really good speed-bumps/behind-the-lines objective takers.

All four of these boxes are going up for pre-order soon. Which is a little surprising as it feels early for them…but we’re almost in November! Start planning now.
