The survey is open for Unearthd Arcana 8 – Bastions & Cantrips. Now’s your chance to shape the future of basebuilding in D&D.

Unearthed Arcana 8 introduced a whole new system of constructing a base in D&D. Whether you build yourself a fortified keep, a sprawling manor, a wizard’s tower, or the cozy tavern/inn of your dreams (well you can’t actually do the tavern until you’re 17th level because some of the Bastion system rules are a little absurd), you can use the Bastion rules to give your home base a mechanical effect that you can carry into your next adventure.

And now is a crucial time for the future of those rules. The big survey is open, and WotC will be eyeing the results very carefully. This new ruleset is open for its first round of commentary, possibly the last. We’ve seen WotC nix things, even things that seem to test well. If you like the system or the idea of it, now is the time for your commentary.

And, from previous videos going over survey results, we know that WotC pays attention to both how the system is ranking and to the specific commentary. Alongside the Bastion System, new changes to Cantrips are afoot.

Unearthed Arcana 8 Survey – Bastions & Cantrips

The Unearthed Arcana 8 survey is open for business. And just as a refresher of the rules coming under the magnifying glass for community feedback:

The Bastion System is a series of level-dependent benefits. Starting at 5th level, you get a Bastion as part of your level up. Your Bastion contains two special facilities that can give you in-game benefits, and as you level up you’ll get two more at 9th, 13th, and 17th level. While it being based on level is one way to do it, it leads to some absurdities like “you can’t open a pub until you’re 17th level”.

Personally, the level-dependent aspect of the Bastion system feels too clunky. It could just as easily stem from the fiction (bought with gold or the like) or from reputation or other in-game achievements. But once again, everything is heaped on a character’s level. Making it the only measure of character power that matters, for better and most definitely for worse.

Cantrips got some much-needed revisions. Chill Touch is now a touch spell, True Strike is a fun melee cantrip instead of a waste of space, and so on. You can read the Unearthed Arcana, and take the survey below.

Be sure and tell them what you REALLY think!
