Goatboy’s Warhammer 40K: I’m Not Ready to Say Goodbye to My Converted Minis

Goatboy here, thinking about all the missing converted models that I… well miss.   Those minis we all converted due to not having a true “model” that make our armies unique.

If you’ve been playing for awhile you know that in the past there was quite a few units that didn’t have official models.  You had to create them from bits and pieces you gathered and “create” these leaders for your army.  This was heavily used within the confines of Power Armor.  I think I got piles of minis I have “created” throughout my days all based on the whims of point costs, wargear costs, and just wanting something unique.

Which is a big driing force for many players – just wanting something that looks different than anyone else’s model.  I love a lot of the new stuff as it is dynamic, looks cool, and they are properly equipped.  I just don’t love how so much of it looks identical on the tabletop if you are playing a model that is considered “good” competitively.  I miss those days where you stared at a pile of legs, bodies, and arms and tried to kitbash your way into something unique.

Custom Chaos Lords

Since I am a Chaos Marine fan boy let’s start with the things I miss from them.  The biggest loss I feel is the overall Chaos Lord and how much of their load out is now locked into a rather – tiny model.  Yes the Chaos Lord model is cool and its rules/load out is good.  It just doesn’t fit all the things I want a Chaos Lord to be.  I miss the ability to throw a Jump Pack/Winged Pack on it.  I miss all the weird swords, weapons, and other bits that we could have.  I miss just having a uniquely designed little load out bully that runs around the table and gets jobs done.

Biker Characters

Along those lines too the old Biker characters are also a big “miss” right now in the game for me too.  Chaos had biker stuff as well as weird steed options and so did the loyal Space Marines.  It feels weird for armies that love mounted options to only have one “mounted” character unless you are playing Space Wolves.  Where is my Captain on a bike looking bad ass on a tactical rock?

I get that the game had to solidify its choices for armies.  I understand that having something you can’t just buy in a box is an issue for a game.  I just miss some of these “options” we could have had and think – why don’t they add these neat things back?  There are a ton of leadership options that could be built and created easily enough to allow for some unique builds beyond people just trying to 3d print their way to something interesting.

What Are You Missing?

What models do you miss from the game?  I think with so much push towards riding the ebb and flow of a good army just creates a lot of stagnant looking options on the tabletop.  It is hard to build up an army that looks cool and unique – but ends up being actually good.  How many times do we see basic “builds” in a race to keep up with your neighbors awesome boring looking army units getting to the podium.

I just wish we had some of this “unique” bits of the game back in.  I want to see cool heroes doing awesome stuff instead of the same model fighting on the tactical rock over and over again.

What did you do with all your no longer official converted minis?
