Warhammer 40K ventures once more into the CCG arena, only this time it’s all digital. Warpforge promises card-based carnage.

Warhammer 40K: Warpforge is a “digital collectible card game” currently in development from  Everguild. What does that mean? It’s an ambitious bid to bring the endless war of the 41st millennium into the same arena as games like Hearthstone.

Will it work? You can find ou on October 19th, when the game officially enters Early Access on Steam, or later on the Apple App and Google Play stores come November 2nd if you prefer your collectible card games mobile, these days. Which seems to be the majority of folks.

But what does it look like? How does it play? In the accompanying announcement, we got a look at some of the gameplay. Scroll on to see!

Warhammer 40K: Warpforge

Get ready to lead the epic armies of the 41st Millennium in Warhammer 40,000: Warpforge! After its Closed Alpha and Beta period, the game is finally getting a release date, and it’s sooner than you can imagine.

Warpforge is set to redefine the digital card game genre, offering a whole new gaming take on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, with its most iconic armies fighting in astonishing scenarios that shift under different environmental conditions, an innovative progression system that allows players to collect and play with their favourite armies from the start, and astounding artwork, visual effects, music and voice overs to provide a perfect immersive experience in the grim darkness of the 41st Millenium.

We’re thrilled to announce that Warhammer 40,000: Warpforge will be released on Steam Early Access on 19th October 2023. Prepare to immerse yourself in the grim darkness of the far future! Command your armies as some of the most iconic characters of the setting, and conquer the many battlefields of the Galaxy in brutal card battles. Will you withstand the whims of fate and climb your way to the top ranks? Your legend begins here!

As you can tell from some of the gameplay screenshots, it’s hard not to see the bones of Hearthstone and Legends of Runeterra in the gameplay design. You get an ever increasing pool of some mana like resources (that seems to cap out at 10). There are bright, vibrant animations. And the usual card effects that can be tracked and handled by the game’s AI are all there. But the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

When done well, these kinds of games are extremely satisfying. And Everguild has “poured their love of card games” into this, per their press release. Can Warpforge deliver the goods? Here’s hoping, because just the other day I thought “oh hey, I have enough free time to actually be productive.”
