Special and Heavy Weapon upgrades are compatible with different Marks of Power Armour. This is sneaky-smart by Games Workshop.

Lots of folks will bash GW when they put out a questionable kit. But it’s rare to see folks that bash them also point out when GW does something right. This is a case where someone at GW thought of the fans and made the right call. And it all has to do with the Special and Heavy Weapon kits being compatible with MKIII and MVI Power Armour.

As we’ve mentioned previously the Legion Astartes Battle Group box is a really good deal and a great addition. But one of the big questions I had was regarding the Special Weapons upgrades. While I wasn’t 100% sure how many sets we’d get, I was also wondering if these were the same weapons as the upgrade pack. And if so, would they fit with the armor? The good news is that someone at GW had the same question and line of thinking as I did; they thought of that, too!

“These miniatures are cross-compatible with the Special Weapons and Heavy Weapons upgrade sets released for the MKVI tactical squads, as Les from the Warhammer Studio has demonstrated on his Dark Angels.

Each of the guns has been designed to be non specific to any particular Horus Heresy armour-mark.

“But WarCom,” we hear you cry. “MKIII armour has vambraces on the forearms. They look totally different to MKVI armour!”

Never fear! The sprues for the MKIII Space Marines contain five sets of armoured vambraces on each frame, which are designed to be fixed onto the arms in the two heavy weapon upgrade kits.”

Horus Heresy Cross-Compatible Special and Heavy Weapons

Not only do the Special Weapons fit the same as they would on MKVI Marines, GW even created Vambraces for the forearms so you can use Heavy Weapons, too.

That’s right: you don’t need to buy a completely different set of weapons! This is a win for fans and a great move by GW. It might seem like a little thing (I mean it literally is a little set of Vambraces) but it’s a really thoughtful and nice touch. If you’re a Horus Heresy die-hard and you want to your army to look “historically accurate” then this is for YOU.

If you’re going to call it fair you need to call out the mistakes as well as the wins. And this is definitely a win.
