With D&D 2024 around the corner, Matt Colville of “Running the Game” talks Edition Change in a new video.

D&D is heading into its 50th anniversary with a brand new not-edition update to 5th Edition. With the working title of D&D 2024, neé One D&D, the new not-edition is bringing many changes to core features of the game, including updates for many classes, and basic rules like grappling and healing.

So much so, that WotC has released multiple videos explaining that D&D 2024 isn’t, in fact 5.5E.

Naturally, both 5.5E and One D&D have stuck around in the community. And as Matt Colville playfully weighs in, an edition war is a-brewing. Sort of. Not really. Unless you wanna be dramatic, in which case, go for it.

Matt Colville – So, Your D&D Edition is Changing

In a video titled So, Your D&D Edition is Changing, Colville wades into D&D as it is now, on the brink of 2024, as well as how it was in D&D’s of ages past, when the Editions flipped, and grognards went to war.

Flame wars, mostly. But it’s the thought that counts. Colville’s first point, and the most salient, is that 5th Edition’s success is due in no small part to the incredible community.

And while WotC has definitely maneuvered itself to take advantage of it, the two biggest factors in the community’s rise are outside of their control. The first is Stranger Things, which reminded everyone that D&D existed. This prompted people who used to play to go and see what happened, and be delighted to discover that D&D was not only still around, but easier to get into than ever, thanks to creators like Colville whose Running the Game series introduced many new DMs to the game.

The other major factor is Critical Role’s meteoric rise. Their ascendance was twofold, as Colville puts it, “professionally charming people playing D&D” as well as being an example you could point to as “this is what D&D is like.”

As for the rest, Colville’s dice into history, particularly the supposed rancor surrounding 4th Edition is well worth the watch. You’ll find out why Colville says “people didn’t hate 4th Edition, but they sure hated [World of Warcraft].”

In the meantime, get ready for the next installment of D&D, coming in 2024.
