The Walking Dead Universe RPG hits shelves today. Now you too can tell Carl your absolute worst dad joke and live to tell the tale.

Free League Publishing released The Walking Dead Universe RPG today, bringing the game of post-apocalyptic zombie survival to the tabletop at long last. The RPG has been in development for a while now, as the team at Free League has been working closely with the folks at AMC to make sure they accurately represent the world of the TV show, which is itself based on the graphic novels you read back when zombies were still new and edgy and hadn’t taken over pop culture.

And now the RPG will bring new life to the undead world, casting players as survivors in the world of The Walking Dead. You’ll take on challenges in your own campaign or can play in the more cinematic mode, where you get to meet people from the TV show. No, seriously.

The Walking Dead Universe RPG – Out Today

In The Walking Dead Universe RPG, you will play as people struggling to survive in a hostile world. Exceptional challenges can appear from anywhere – from the lack of essential supplies, from conflicts brewing within the group, from hidden construction flaws in your safe haven, or from approaching walkers hungering for your flesh.

In The Walking Dead Universe RPG, the player characters must not only hone their physical skills, but deeply explore who they truly are – what drives them to go on, what they consider worth fighting for, and what they’re capable of doing, in the best and worst of times.

Expect the stress and stakes to be high. The rules of The Walking Dead Universe RPG are based on the acclaimed Year Zero Engine, used in Free League´s award-winning games such as the ALIEN RPG, Blade Runner RPG, Tales From the Loop RPG, Mutant: Year Zero and Forbidden Lands, but uniquely tailored for The Walking Dead Universe.

In a nutshell, the game uses the Year Zero Engine to let you play in one of the two main modes for the game. There’s “Campaign Mode” which is the traditional sandbox RPG mode that you think of when thinking of an RPG. You play as a party of characters of your own creation. The GM comes up with challenges. And along the way, you have some fun and learn a little something about who your characters are.

Then there’s “Survival Mode” which brings to mind the “Cinematic Play” of the Alien RPG. You play in pre-generated adventures, but often with a less “win the adventure” mindset and more of a focus on how you’re all going to die terribly. At least that’s how it is in Alien, it is likely different in The Walking Dead. But we do know that the Survival Mode scenarios are where characters and locations from the TV series show up.

This serves as a reminder that this RPG was developed in close collaboration with The Walking Dead Universe’s Chief Content Officer (what a title), Scott M. Gimple. At any rate, you can give both of these a shot by picking up The Walking Dead Universe RPG today!

Zombies are back again, just like the nineties and soon, the early aughts!
