Goatboy here, with the top 5 most-improved Necron units from their newly updated 40K 10th Edition Codex.

It seems the Necron Codex has been well received. The Necron index was pretty good, and the entire list of models is vast enough – as well as plastic enough – to cover everything an undead robot would love to play with.  Of course, some of these things got a boost up, and that is what I want to talk about today.

The best thing about the codex was GW actually went in and updated Dataslates to make things better, work out some weird interactions, and just make for a better player experience.  I am hoping we see that for all the future codexes, as while the Indexes work – there could be a lot to fix up on these.

Let’s start this list with the best glow-up we have seen.  I found two sets of these in my very large pile of shame.  I don’t know what I will do with them – beyond just thinking – do I really want to start a Necron army?

1. Canoptek Wraiths

These guys were heavily used in older editions and we have watched their use go up and down depending on how powerful they are.  The last edition Necron codex didn’t have them be nearly as popular due to their point costs and just not being needed in the “always” scoring mentality of that editions custom Necron army.  This time around, they are set to go gangbusters with a cheaper point cost, more wounds, and a detachment designed for them. The Canoptek Court is very friendly to having a Cryptek hooked up to the Wraiths.  Expect to see 15-18 in most lists for the coming months just due to the more tanky nature of having 4 wounds now, good invulnerable save, and just decent damage output.

2. Nightbringer

This scythe-y guy got a lot better with the overall glow-up Shards got with the built-in Feel No Pain.  What makes Nightbringer interesting is that being a Named Character helps you take him as well as being a very aggressive assault-style character.  Oh, and he is cheap too.  All of these things just let him become a pain in the butt on the tabletop.  Oh – and he is a rather small model too, which just lets him move around the table, get in close, and just start throwing out mortal wounds.

3. Necron Warriors

It is amazing when removing a unit’s ability to join something else pumps up the basic troop choice for the army.  Having the Warriors be one of the places the Technomancer can hide in means these guys are going to be the default bricks for the Necron Army.  You throw in some characters, watch the rules stack up, and just look at the groaning on your opponent’s face as they try to figure out how to kill 20 of these jerks fast.

4. Technomancer

This guy got much better with just adding in the ability to join Wraiths and give them a FNP.  This is huge! It makes one of the best units for the Codex into something of a monster for the game.  The Wraiths are going to be hard to get rid of, the Canoptek Court Detachment is powerful, plus this guy just all adds up to a level of combo’s that is going to be hard to chew through.  The Technomancer is gonna be showing up in a 3-pack for most Necron lists, so be prepared to see some kitbashed ones in the future.

5. Doom Scythe

This one might not show up a bunch but their ability got fixed to work on all Unit types.  This is big as it can do some crazy damage output for those willing to “stand” still and take the death beam.  The guys on the flying pastry all gain Sustained Hits and having it activate on a 5+ could be huge – especially for the Tesla gun and the 3 shot Death Ray itself.  Rolling 2 fives could all of a sudden make this thing become a decent tank killer. Just forcing those things to get a -1 to hit if they duck could be a huge boom for the army.

What other things have you found to have gotten a glow up with the new Necron Codex?  Are there some things we are going to see in every army?  Is the Canoptek Court going to be the default Detachment for the Necrons?  It is a pretty interesting time for the undead Space Robots right now with so many cool things working for the army.

All Hail the Silent King!
