Godzilla: Minus One is being re-released in glorious black and white next year. See the hit movie in a whole new way.

Since its big screen debut in 1954, Godzilla has become an icon not just of movies but television, comics, animation, and books. He’s been a destroyer and a hero. Over the years, the King of Monsters has been the star of multiple big-screen adaptations.

Most of the Godzilla movies released in the last couple of decades have shown a contemporary version of the King of Monsters or pit him against other giants like Kong. This goes back on the timeline to the start–it’s set in postwar Japan. One monster versus humanity.

“Postwar Japan has lost everything. The film depicts an existence that gives unprecedented despair. The title Godzilla Minus One was created with this in mind. In order to depict this, the staff and I have worked together to create a setting where Godzilla looks as if ‘fear’ itself is walking toward us, and where despair is piled on top of despair. I think this is the culmination of all the films I have made to date, and one that deserves to be ‘experienced’ rather than ‘watched’ in the theater. I hope you will experience the most terrifying Godzilla in the best possible environment.”

The movie is already being hailed as one of the best films of the year and has broken box office records. I have to agree. It was given an extended run and is still in select theaters. See it before it leaves—it’s worthy of the biggest screen you have access to.

Godzilla Minus One in Black & White

Toho is offering fans the chance to see it in a whole new way next year. They’re re-releasing Godzilla: Minus One in black and white. The first trailer evokes the look and feel of the original movie that debuted in 1954. It looks fantastic.

Godzilla Minus One Details & Cast

This is the first new Toho Godzilla film since 2016. The movie is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki and stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki. It features music by Naoki Sato.

In postwar Japan, a new terror rises; Godzilla. Will the devastated people be able to survive… let alone fight back?

Godzilla-1.0/C (aka Minus One: Minus Color) will debut in Japanese theaters on January 12th. An international release date hasn’t been announced, but given how successful the color version was, it’s only a matter of time.
