The two icons return to the screen next year in Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire. This time they’re teaming up to take out a new, dangerous enemy.

2021’s Godzilla vs Kong is a campy romp with plenty of giant monsters fighting while wrecking cities. There are no excess, time-eating scenes filled with explanations and pontificating or slo-mo. The story gives what you need to know when you need to know it, and added background information doesn’t get in the way of the ride. Is it the best movie ever? No. Is it even in the top 5 Godzilla movies? No. But it is a great popcorn movie you can enjoy without feeling tired at the end.

Its hybrid release during the tail end of the pandemic closures led to record streaming numbers, so of course, we’re getting more for better or worse. I saw Godzilla Minus One this weekend – I’m leaning toward worse.

Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire Trailer

Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire starts not too long after the last movie. Instead of more infighting, the duo band together to fight against a new, mysterious red ape that wants to wipe humanity off the map.

Kong and Godzilla have experienced some upgrades since we last saw them. Along with their newfound alliance, the giant lizard has gone from emitting blue energy to pink, and Kong has some new weaponry… and a kid.

If you like giant CG monster fights, this looks like a good bet. It isn’t going to be Citizen Kane or an Oscar contender; it shouldn’t be. Let’s just hope it has a decent corny/serious balance so it’s fun and not a drag.

Director Adam Wingard told IGN he is letting the monsters tell their own stories.

The skills that it takes to create a giant monster movie are so specific that you have to learn them, and only at the end of production was I like, ‘Oh wait, now I know. I had all these different ideas of what I would do next time and how I could improve upon it.

So much of the film is entirely animated CG shots; so much of it is just pure imagination. We have some sequences going up to about eight minutes long, where it’s just the monsters doing their thing, and so the movie really allows the monsters to tell their own narrative in a visual, nonverbal way.
