The Space Marine Scouts are getting an update from the new Kill Team: Salvation box. They took a few pages from the Black Templar.

Kill Team: Salvation features new Space Marine Scouts and also Aeldari Striking Scorpions. Both of these kits needed the update but for different reasons. Today, we’re going to tackle those new Scouts and what they borrowed from the Black Templar Neophytes.

Space Marine Scouts Vs Neophytes

I’ll be honest, when I first saw the reveals for the new Scouts I was thinking “didn’t the Black Templar releases already do this?” I mean, they are right there in the Combat Patrol:

Sure, they are called Neophytes but they are basically Scout models. They wear the same gear, they have the same load out, it’s kind of a “we’ve seen this before” release. They just borrowed the same stuff, right? Oh how I wrong I was.

On closer inspection these models are very different from the five Neophyte miniatures. For starters, no tabards. Secondly, look at their arms — the Black Templars aren’t wearing sleeves where as the Space Marine Scouts are. Additionally, they have different gloves and vambraces, too. And speaking of clothing, look at their pants and knee pads. The Black Templar Neophytes have two studs where as the Space Marine Scouts have smooth pads.

I know that these are all really obvious once you actually look at the miniatures. But again, I saw the Kill Team box and immediately thought “oh more Scouts. eh. But we finally got plastic Striking Scorpions!” So I really didn’t give them a second look. Until now because Kill Team: Salvation is right around the corner.

The Scouts have a lot of really great looking wargear upgrades coming in Kill Team: Salvation as well. So I’m looking forward to seeing those miniatures in person. I’m also curious about when we’re going to see the new Space Marine Scout kit launch. It’s been a while since they were revealed. And after looking at the new Warhammer.com site, I can’t seem to find them. But the Terminator Squad update was released.

Space Marine Scouts have been a go to unit as a cheap and (relatively) effective Troop option for many editions. There’s even been a few times when they kind of broke the meta. I’m glad I took a second to re-evaluate these miniatures and didn’t just brush them aside as a rehash of the Black Templar Neophytes or “just another Space Marine release.”

They are bigger and badder than their previous incarnation as the miniature range has gone full-on Primaris mode. I guess they are going to give Intercessors a run for those Troop slots once again. And maybe even give those Phobos-pattern Space Marines a run for their jobs, too.

…Hey wait a minute!

It might a case of Cheap Scouts vs Elite Scouts after the Space Marine Scout Kit shows up.
