The first trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem series asks audiences to “prepare for something very strange.”

It all starts with a young woman’s actions in the 1960s. Actions that reverberate across space and time into the present day and cause the laws of nature to unravel. Something is out there beyond the stars. This sci-fi epic will take audiences from the 1960s Cultural Revolution in China to the present-day streets of Oxford to the United Nations in New York and virtual worlds. Solving its mystery will reveal earth-shattering discoveries and has its characters fighting to stop a catastrophe that could cause humanity’s end.

Netflix announced that it was adapting Cixin Liu’s Hugo award-winning 3 Body Problem trilogy back in 2020. The novels span continents and timelines and go far beyond the known world—many consider it too high-concept to bring to the screen. Despite the doubts, the first trailer looks promising.

As with all adaptations, changes have been made to make the vast and complex story work on the small screen. This includes some chronological shifts, character tweaks, and shifting the present-day story primarily to the UK. Lead writer Alexander Woo explained what fans of the books can expect to TUDUM

“The experience of watching a television series is different from watching a feature film, [which] is so different from the experience of reading a novel. What we are hoping to do is to convey the experience — if not necessarily the exact details — of the novel onto the screen.  What stayed, we hope, is the sense of wonderment and the sense of scope, of scale, where the problems are no longer just the problems of an individual or even a nation, but of an entire species.”
