Games Workshop is teasing some of the Regiments of Renown coming with The Mad King Rises.  It’s the march of the Mortarchs!

Dawnbringers: book IV – The Mad King Rises is coming to pre-order this weekend and Games Workshop has a trio of previews. These are just a small taste of the Regiments of Renown coming in the book. In total, there will be six new Regiments to play with but for now, let’s see what GW is teasing.

via Warhammer Community

“The Mortarchs are creations of Nagash, the Supreme Lord of the Undead. They act as executors of his will – his lidless eyes and bony hands stretching out across the Mortal Realms. Though they may jostle amongst themselves for power and chafe at the actions of the others, they will cooperate if Nagash demands.

Like previous Regiments of Renown, each of these new units can be taken in any Death faction that isn’t the home faction for that Mortarch – Mannfred von Carstein, for instance, won’t turn up with his Sternieste Garrison in a Soulblight Gravelords army.”

Ushoran’s Maddening Radience

I’m pretty sure that’s a typo and it’s supposed to be Maddening Radiance but that’s just how the image spells it. Anyhow, this is just one of the abilities Ushoran is granted with the Regiment of Renown. It adds 1 attack to the characteristic of melee weapons for the Cryptguard and Morbheg Knights that are accompanying him. Not too shabby as compensation for adding him to a non-FEC army.

Neferata’s The Blood Queen’s Will

I had to pause for a second as I thought the Blood Queen was Morathi. But no, in this case it’s a reference to Neferata. This ability is actually extremely handy as long as she’s still alive and on the table. Once per battle you can swap the Battle Tactic you chose for a different eligible battle tactic. Now, I don’t know if this has ever happened to you, but sometimes your battle plan doesn’t work out quite right and you miss your battle tactic. This allows you to choose what you want to complete after your turn. Did you miss the Battle Tactic you wanted to do but completed a different one by chance? Swap it out and score those points!

Lady Olynder’s Harvesters of Sorrow

The Sorrowmourn Choir has a nice combo of tricks up their ghostly sleeves. First up, enemy units can’t issue or receive commands during the battleshock phase while they are within 3″ of any units in this Regiment of Renown. That means no Inspiring Presence to stop things from running. Additionally, when you make an unmodified charge roll of 8+ the get to strike-first! This is a nice way to transplant some Nighthaunt nasty into your Death army for sure!

Of the three Regiments GW teased, I was thinking that Neferata would be extremely handy for fixing a tactical error. However, I think Lady Olynder’s crew might win out for overall usefulness. Shutting down Inspiring Presence (or other commands) could really mess up any number of enemy units as they flee off the tabletop.

Again, there’s a total of six in the upcoming Dawnbringer book. I’m looking forward to seeing the rest!
